John Wall to Be Waived After Rockets Trade; Gordon to Clippers in 3-Team Deal
February 9, 2023
The Houston Rockets, Memphis Grizzlies and Los Angeles Clippers reportedly completed a three-team trade ahead of Thursday's 3 p.m. ET deadline involving John Wall, Eric Gordon and Luke Kennard.
ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski and Tim MacMahon, as well as Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium, provided details of the deal:
While Wall may be the headliner of this deal just because of a resume that includes five All-Star appearances, he will not suit up for the Rockets. Bleacher Report's Chris Haynes reported Wall will be waived. If he clears waivers, he'll be a free agent.
Injuries have sapped Wall of much of the explosiveness that defined his prime on the Washington Wizards, and he averaged 11.4 points in the 34 games he played for the Clippers this season.
This also means Gordon is returning to the Clippers, which is the team that drafted him with the No. 7 overall pick in 2008. He played his first three seasons in Los Angeles and has since suited up for the New Orleans Pelicans and Rockets.
This was Gordon's sixth season in Houston, and he is averaging 13.2 points, 2.9 assists and 2.1 rebounds per game while shooting 34.7 percent from deep.
Trading Gordon continues Houston's rebuild as the team has stripped its roster of veteran players.
Gordon had previously expressed a desire to remain in Houston. The Rockets' young guards also developed a bond with the veteran and expressed their happiness that he wasn't traded at the 2022 deadline.
"Can't put an amount on how much I wanted him to stay," Rockets guard Kevin Porter Jr. told reporters. "EG's one of our guys. At least for me, he's been here and been a vet to me since I've been here. So it would have been hard on me and the team if the trade did happen, but we're happy that it didn't. We want Eric here."
That said, his tact seemed to change this season. He was clearly frustrated with the team's ongoing rebuilding process and said he saw "no improvement" from the roster.
"Same old thing all year. We have a small margin for error," Gordon said. "It's a lot of things. It's mindset. You got to play for one another. Do what's right by your teammates. If you do that, it'd be more fun. You give yourself a better chance to win"
The Rockets viewed Gordon as one of their most tradeable assets and saw an opportunity to move him before his contract becomes non-guaranteed next offseason.
As for Kennard, he will the opportunity to continue playing for a contender in Memphis.
His ability to hit from deep (44.7 percent this season) should play well alongside Ja Morant given the amount of attention the point guard draws when he attacks the basket.
