Updated Farm System Rankings for the 2023 MLB Season

With the calendar flipped to 2023 and spring training fast approaching, it's time for our first MLB farm system rankings of the new year.

The following factors helped determine the placement of players and teams:

• Potential (Player): Potential trumps production a lot of the time, especially in the lower levels of the minors and with recent draft picks. Skill sets and tools are often better indicators of what kind of player someone will be.
• Talent (Player): As for those in the higher levels of the minors who are close to breaking through to the big leagues, production and talent were the determining factors, as these players are viewed as more complete products.
• Overall Depth (Team): Having one or two elite prospects is great, but a deep farm system is the way to build a sustainable contender. Depth and talent were the biggest factors in ranking each team.
• High-End Talent (Team): There is a difference between a prospect who has a chance of making an impact in the majors and a prospect who could be a star. Elite prospects served as a tiebreaker when teams were close in the rankings.

A tier system was used to help differentiate the varying levels of individual talent:

• Tier 1: Prospects who have elite skill sets and All-Star potential. This is the cream of the prospect crop. These players currently make up B/R's 2023 Top 100 prospect list, which published on Jan. 6.
• Tier 2: Prospects who have a good chance of becoming impact contributors. These are the players who were in consideration for spots on B/R's 2023 Top 100 prospect list and could end up there in the future.
• Tier 3: Prospects who profile as fringe MLB contributors or young players who are still too raw to project any higher. This tier represents the bulk of prospects around baseball, though more than a few could climb to the next tier.

Teams were initially ranked based on the average tier ranking of their top 10 prospects, and the rankings were then subjectively tweaked from there.

Note: A player must not have passed the rookie-eligibility limits (130 at-bats, 50 innings pitched, 45 days on an active roster prior to Sept. 1) to be included in these rankings.

Farm System Snapshot

• The Braves traded away four prospects who most recently ranked in their top 10—Kyle Muller (2), Freddy Tarnok (6), Royber Salinas (7) and Justyn-Henry Malloy (9)—in the deals to acquire catcher Sean Murphy from Oakland and reliever Joe Jiménez from Detroit.
• Keep an eye on 2021 second-round pick Spencer Schwellenbach, who will be making his long-awaited pro debut after undergoing Tommy John surgery shortly after he was drafted. He is still raw on the mound after serving as a two-way player in college, but he has the stuff and athleticism to quickly emerge as a top-tier pitching prospect.

Farm System Snapshot

• Expect to see catcher Logan O'Hoppe on the Opening Day roster after he received a cup of coffee as a September call-up last year. Veteran Max Stassi will still factor into the team's catching plans, and the two will likely split starting duties to begin the year.
• The Angels have not had the best luck developing middle infield prospects in recent years. However, 2022 first-round pick Zach Neto could buck that trend after he hit .299/.377/.476 with 15 extra-base hits in 37 games while reaching Double-A in his pro debut.

• New White Sox manager Pedro Grifol recently told 670 The Score that "Oscar Colás is going to be given every opportunity to see if he can become our right fielder on a daily basis." The organization did not hesitate to give Luis Robert and Eloy Jiménez starting jobs out of spring training, so that will be a major storyline this spring. 
• With a projectable 6'9" frame and the makings of a lethal fastball-slider combination, Noah Schultz could quickly jump on leaguewide Top 100 prospect lists in his pro debut. The Illinois prep standout was the No. 26 overall pick in the 2022 draft.

• The Philadelphia system is headlined by two of baseball's best pitching prospects in Andrew Painter and Mick Abel, and with improved command, Griff McGarry is capable of making a similar leap. The 23-year-old had 53 walks in 87.1 innings last season, though he also racked up 130 strikeouts.
• Infielder Hao-Yu Lee hit .284/.386/.438 with 26 extra-base hits and 14 steals in 79 games while reaching High-A in his age-19 season. He will quickly jump up to Tier 2 with a similar showing in the upper levels of the minors.

• This could be a make-or-break year for Orelvis Martinez's standing as an elite prospect. The 21-year-old has been pushed aggressively through the minor league ranks, but he was completely overmatched at Double-A last year with a .203/.286/.446 line and a 28.5 percent strikeout rate.

• Left-hander Adam Macko was acquired along with Erik Swanson in the deal that sent  Teoscar Hernández to Seattle back in November. The 22-year-old has 148 strikeouts in 95.0 innings since going in the seventh round of the 2019 draft, though he was limited by an elbow strain and meniscus injury last year.

• Will we see Eury Pérez in the majors in 2023? The 19-year-old more than held his own over 17 starts at Double-A last season, posting a 4.08 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and a 106-to-25 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 75 innings, but the Marlins will be careful not to overextend their top prospect.
• Shortstop Jose Salas—who was No. 4 on the Marlins prospect list last update—was traded to the Minnesota Twins as part of the Pablo López-for-Luis Arraez swap earlier this month. Right-hander Karson Milbrandt now moves into the top 10 after signing an above-slot $1.5 million bonus as a third-round pick in 2022.

• Even after gutting their farm system to acquire Juan Soto last summer, the Padres still have one elite-level prospect in shortstop Jackson Merrill. The 19-year-old hit .339/.395/.511 with 23 extra-base hits in 250 plate appearances last season, and he will likely start 2023 at the High-A level.
• Outfielder Samuel Zavala does not turn 19 years old until July 15, but he has already gained valuable experience at the Single-A level. One of the youngest players in the California League, he logged an .863 OPS with 15 extra-base hits and 26 RBI in 33 games.

• Whether he wins a spot in the starting rotation or starts the year in a bullpen role, hard-throwing Hunter Brown is ready to make an impact in the majors. The 24-year-old had a 0.89 ERA and 22 strikeouts in 20.1 innings as a September call-up last year, and he logged 3.2 more scoreless frames in the postseason.
• Former Tier 1 prospect Pedro León underwent hernia surgery earlier this month and is expected to be sidelined for the start of spring training. He hit .228 with a 28.8 percent strikeout rate at Triple-A last year, and at 24 years old, his prospect window is rapidly closing.

• The Royals selected Gavin Cross with the No. 9 overall pick in the 2022 draft, and he immediately jumped to the No. 1 spot in their organizational rankings. The Virginia Tech standout hit .312/.437/.633 in 135 plate appearances in his pro debut after signing.
• Catcher Carter Jensen was plucked from the Royals' backyard when he was chosen in the third round in 2021 out of Park Hill High School in Kansas City. He logged a .363 on-base percentage with 24 doubles, 11 home runs and 50 RBI in 113 games at Single-A while also throwing out 30 percent of base-stealers.

• With Harry Ford (19), Cole Young (19), Gabriel Gonzalez (19), Lazaro Montes (18) and Michael Arroyo (18) all still shy of their 20th birthdays, the Seattle farm system is poised to climb these rankings in the coming years.
• While much of the attention goes to the top three arms in the Mariners' system, right-hander Bryan Woo is an under-the-radar arm on the rise. The 23-year-old underwent Tommy John surgery before going in the sixth round of the 2021 draft, and he had 84 strikeouts in 57 innings in his pro debut last summer.

• It looks like Garrett Mitchell is the leading candidate for the starting center field job on Opening Day. The 24-year-old hit .312/.373/.459 with three doubles, two home runs, eight steals and 0.9 WAR in 28 games as a September call-up last season, 
• The Milwaukee system is thin on high-ceiling pitching prospects right now, with the exception of 2022 second-round pick Jacob Misiorowski. The 6'7" JUCO standout has a 70-grade fastball that touches 100 mph, and the Brewers gave him a massive $2.35 million signing bonus.

• Signed for $1.5 million out of the Dominican Republic in 2021, outfielder Miguel Bleis hit .301/.353/.542 with 23 extra-base hits and 18 steals in 40 games in his stateside debut. His jump to full-season ball is among the most anticipated of 2023.

• With no outside addition made at shortstop this offseason, it looks like 21-year-old Ezequiel Tovar will be the guy for the Rockies in 2023. A slick fielder with Gold Glove potential defensively, he also hit .319/.387/.540 with 32 extra-base hits in 318 plate appearances in the upper levels of the minors.
• After hitting .333/.444/.444 with 16 steals in 21 games in the Arizona Fall League, we could see outfielder Zac Veen push his way into the MLB picture sooner rather than later. The 21-year-old was the No. 9 overall pick in the 2020 draft.

• Even with Isiah Kiner-Falefa returning, expect Oswald Peraza to be given a real shot to win the starting shortstop job during spring training. The 22-year-old has the glove to handle the position at the highest level, and he hit .306/.404/.429 in 57 plate appearances as a September call-up.
• With a high-octane fastball-curveball combination, Clayton Beeter could ultimately fit best in a relief role. The 24-year-old was acquired from the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for Joey Gallo last summer, and he's a dark-horse candidate to fill a role in the New York bullpen in 2023.

• The Cubs acquired Pete Crow-Armstrong (NYM for Javier Báez), Kevin Alcantara (NYY for Anthony Rizzo), Hayden Wesneski (NYY for Scott Effross) and Ben Brown (PHI for David Robertson) in deadline deals the past two summers, effectively restocking their farm system while retooling the roster.
• The decision to sign veterans Trey Mancini and Eric Hosmer creates a road block for Matt Mervis, who hit .309/.379/.606 with 40 doubles, 36 home runs and 119 RBI in the upper minors last year. That said, Hosmer is making the league minimum, so he could easily be cut loose if Mervis outperforms him this spring.

• With a 55-hit, 65-power offensive profile, Marco Luciano still has one of the highest offensive ceilings of any prospect in baseball. However, after posting lackluster numbers at High-A while dealing with a back injury, he will need to prove he still belongs among the game's elite up-and-comers in 2023.
• Casey Schmitt hit .293/.365/.489 with 25 doubles, 21 home runs and 78 RBI in 126 games across three minor league levels last year, closing out the season at Triple-A Sacramento. The 23-year-old could push for the Giants' starting third base job by midseason.

• With Shea Langeliers set to take over as the starting catcher in the majors and Daniel Susac selected in the first round of the 2022 draft, a full-time move to first base seems likely for top prospect Tyler Soderstrom. That could help expedite his exciting offensive game to the majors.
• The Athletics acquired Kyle Muller (No. 4) and Esteury Ruiz (No. 9) in the three-team deal that sent Sean Murphy to the Atlanta Braves, as well as pitching prospects Freddy Tarnok and Royber Salinas, who just missed cracking the top 10.

• Outfielder Evan Carter filled up the stat sheet last season, hitting .295/.397/.489 with 21 doubles, 10 triples, 12 home runs, 73 RBI, 86 runs and 28 steals in 106 games between High-A and Double-A. He also has the defensive chops to be a quality center fielder, making him one of the few true five-tool prospects in the game.
• The Rangers have had a tough time developing pitching prospects over the years, but they have an impressive collection of high-ceiling arms right now in Jack Leiter, Brock Porter, Owen White and Kumar Rocker. From that group, White will likely be the first to reach the majors.

• The future is now for the D-backs with Corbin Carroll, Drey Jameson and Ryne Nelson all in the mix for spots on the Opening Day roster. Top pitching prospect Brandon Pfaadt and outfielder Dominic Fletcher could also see the big leagues in 2023 after impressive showings in the upper levels of the minors.
• Slugger Deyvison De Los Santos will go as far as his right-handed bat carries him, and while an offense-only profile always carries risk, it's tough to ignore his 2022 numbers. The 19-year-old hit .306/.348/.499 with 29 doubles, 22 home runs and 106 RBI in 126 games over three levels while reaching Double-A.

• The Rays develop pitching as well as any organization in baseball, and right-hander Taj Bradley looks like the team's next homegrown ace. The 21-year-old had a 2.57 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 141 strikeouts in 133.1 innings between Double-A and Triple-A in 2022, putting him on the MLB doorstep.
• Outfielder Mason Auer is an under-the-radar name to watch. The 21-year-old hit .290/.372/.487 with 21 doubles, 12 triples, 15 home runs, 62 RBI and 48 steals in 115 games between Single-A and High-A last year. More of the same against upper-level competition will send his stock soaring.

• Top prospect Jackson Jobe has been on a short leash since going No. 3 overall in the 2021 draft. He posted a 3.84 ERA and 81 strikeouts in 77.1 innings in his pro debut last year, pitching more than five innings just twice. The 20-year-old should get a chance to stretch things out a bit more this season.
• The Tigers acquired Justyn-Henry Malloy in the deal that sent reliever Joe Jiménez to Atlanta. The 22-year-old hit .289/.408/.454 with 28 doubles, 17 home runs, 81 RBI and a 16.4 percent walk rate across three levels in 2022. He could see the big leagues by the All-Star break.

• Shortstop Brooks Lee hit .351/.426/.647 in 115 games during his three seasons at Cal Poly, and he continued to rake in his pro debut after going No. 8 overall in the 2022 draft. The 22-year-old batted .303/.389/.451 in 139 plate appearances and closed out the season at Double-A Wichita.
• Right-hander Marco Raya looks like a potential steal as a fourth-round pick in the 2020 draft. A shoulder strain kept him out of affiliated ball action in 2021, but he made up for lost time last year with a 3.05 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 76 strikeouts in 65 innings as a 19-year-old in Single-A.

• Francisco Álvarez and Brett Baty are both expected to open the season at Triple-A Syracuse, but that doesn't mean they won't both be significant contributors during the 2023 season. Álvarez still needs to refine his defensive game, while Baty is working his way back from a thumb injury.
• Shortstop Ronny Mauricio posted an ugly .296 on-base percentage with 125 strikeouts in 123 games at Double-A last year. However, he followed that up by posting a .287/.335/.468 line with 22 extra-base hits in 46 games in the Dominican Winter League to win MVP honors. Which version will show up in 2023?

• One of the best pure hitters in the minor leagues, Endy Rodriguez batted .323/.407/.590 with 39 doubles, 25 home runs, 95 RBI and an 11.3 percent walk rate across three minor league levels last year. The 22-year-old has seen time at catcher, second base and in left field.
• A high-level quarterback recruit in high school, Bubba Chandler is the type of prospect who could take a significant leap forward now that he has turned his full attention to the baseball diamond. He had a 2.61 ERA with 60 strikeouts in 41.1 innings last year while also logging a .713 OPS with four home runs and 17 RBI in semi-regular DH action, but his future is on the mound.

• The Guardians have done a great job developing pitching talent over the past decade, and they have two of the game's top pitching prospects headlining their system right now in Daniel Espino and Gavin Williams. Espino was slowed by knee tendinitis and shoulder soreness last year, but he might have the best pure stuff in the minors.
• Not to be overlooked, Tanner Bibee had a 2.17 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 167 strikeouts in 132.2 innings in 2022. The 6'2" right-hander was a fifth-round pick out of Cal State Fullerton in the 2021 draft and already looks like one of the steals of the class.

• Drafted as a third baseman, Jordan Walker played almost exclusively in the outfield over the final two months of the 2022 season. With Nolan Arenado blocking his path at the hot corner, that move should help expedite his arrival in the majors, and he could make a play for the starting left field job with a big spring training.
• Left-hander Cooper Hjerpe was the NCAA leader with 161 strikeouts in 103.1 innings at Oregon State last spring, to go along with a 2.53 ERA, 0.87 WHIP and .180 opponents' batting average. He is more floor than ceiling long-term, but the Cardinals do a good job squeezing the most out of that type of pitching prospect.

• The Dodgers have the No. 1 farm system in baseball thanks to a top 10 list made up entirely of players they either drafted or signed as international free agents. They may spend a lot of money on the MLB roster, but they also identify and develop talent as well as any organization in the sport.
• Expect to see Bobby Miller, Miguel Vargas, Michael Busch, Gavin Stone, Ryan Pepiot and James Outman all on the MLB roster at some point during the 2023 season, with Vargas, Busch and Outman in the mix for a spot on the Opening Day roster with a strong spring.
