Mets Rumors: Pete Alonso Hires Scott Boras' Agency Ahead of Contract Year, 2024 FA
October 5, 2023
New York Mets slugger Pete Alonso has hired the BorasCorp agency to represent him ahead of his 2024 free agency, run by prominent baseball agent Scott Boras. (Jon Heyman of the New York Post.)
New York recently hired David Stearns as their president of baseball operations and he'll likely work with Alonso's new representatives to secure a contract extension for the three-time All-Star.
There is optimism regarding Alonso's future in New York, even if there currently isn't a long-term extension in place. Speaking at his introductory news conference, the Mets' new president seemed confident about keeping his star first baseman in the blue and orange.
"Pete is a great player. He is also good in the clubhouse. And he is also homegrown. All of that matters," Stearns said. "I expect Pete to be the Opening Day first baseman next year. Pete's an important member of this team. Pete's an important member of this organization. And I think we are really fortunate to have him."
Alonso wrapped up a respectable season this past weekend, racking up 46 home runs and 118 RBIs to go along with an .821 OPS. He's the only MLB player to have three seasons with at least 40 homers since 2019.
Boras and Mets owner Steve Cohen reportedly "have an excellent working relationship," per Heyman, and the two sides have previously agreed to deals with other clients of his, such as Max Scherzer and Brandon Nimmo.
New York almost handed out a massive 12-year, $315 million contract to Carlos Correa last offseason, who is also represented by Boras. The deal eventually fell through due to complications with Correa's physical, which also scuttled a similar deal with the San Francisco Giants. The Platinum Glove-winning shortstop returned to the Minnesota Twins shortly after.
Despite New York's failure to return to the postseason after winning 101 games in 2022, Alonso has remained a productive cleanup hitter. The 28-year-old has been the face of the Mets for years and it'll be up to Stearns and Boras to agree on a contract extension this winter.
If not, the prominent agent should be able to help his new client find a long-term deal either in New York or elsewhere in 2024 free agency.
