MLB Rumors: Jose Perdomo Lands Braves Contract; No. 3 Ranked International Prospect
January 15, 2024
The Atlanta Braves are reportedly adding one of the best players in the international market to their lineup.
Per MLB.com's Jesse Borek and Jesús Cano, the Braves have agreed to terms with shortstop Jose Perdomo, who is ranked as MLB.com's No. 3 international prospect.
Perdomo's deal is reportedly for $5 million. The Braves have a $5.284 million signing pool and have yet to confirm the agreement.
The 17-year-old is described as "one of the purest hitters in this class" in his scouting report by MLB.com.
"The teen's bat-to-ball skills are above-average, and he ranks among the best hitting prospects in the class," the report said. "He has a good feel for the strike zone and his swing continues to improve. Scouts have noted his ability to drive offspeed pitches and fastballs to all fields with relative ease, and he has a knack for making hard contact. He rarely strikes out and always puts the ball in play."
Perdomo was also noted for his speed on the basepaths and his defensive proficiency as "a fundamentally sound shortstop with enough range and arm strength to remain at the position as he makes his way through the Minor Leagues."
The Braves were the best team in the majors during the 2023 regular season, finishing with a 104-58 record. Unfortunately, Atlanta was disappointingly eliminated from the playoffs in the NLDS by the Philadelphia Phillies.
With reigning National League MVP Ronald Acuña Jr. leading the way, the Braves will try to bounce back and return to the World Series in 2024.
