The Associated Press announced its finalists for the NFL's year-end awards, with Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson headlining the list of MVP candidates.

The San Francisco 49ers have two representatives with quarterback Brock Purdy and Christian McCaffrey, while the Buffalo Bills' Josh Allen and Dallas Cowboys' Dak Prescott round out the group.

Jackson is likely headed toward his second MVP after throwing for 3,678 yards and 24 touchdowns while running for 821 yards and five scores in the regular season.

The Ravens' schedule also set up the three-time Pro Bowler with what were effectively MVP eliminators in his final two starts. He combined to go 41-of-56 for 573 yards and seven touchdowns to zero interceptions in wins over the Niners and Miami Dolphins, outclassing Purdy and Dolphins star Tua Tagovailoa.

Miami might at least have an award-winner in wide receiver Tyreek Hill. The 5'10" pass-catcher led the league in receiving yards (1,799) and touchdown receptions (13). While acknowledging the long odds, some thought Hill deserved to be at or near the top of the MVP conversation.

The Defensive Player of the Year race is much tougher to handicap with the Cleveland Browns' Myles Garrett, Dallas Cowboys' Micah Parsons and Pittsburgh Steelers' T.J. Watt all having justifiable claims.

Garrett had 14 sacks, four forced fumbles and 30 quarterback hits while leading one of the NFL's best defenses. Parsons matched those 14 sacks and was a regular terror for opposing quarterbacks off the edge. Watt, the 2021 DPOY winner, led the NFL in sacks (19) for the third time in four years.

No award is more prestigious than MVP, but Defensive Player of the Year might be the most compelling honor to follow for this season.
