Jayden Daniels has significant momentum to be the No. 2 overall pick in next month's NFL draft, but Drake Maye may have won over the most important voice in the Washington Commanders' war room.

Mike Sando of The Athletic reported Commanders general manager Adam Peters is "really into" Maye despite five of six league executives pegging Daniels for the No. 2 slot.

B/R's Scouting Department seems to agree with Peters' assessment, ranking Maye as the top quarterback in the 2024 class. Maye is No. 3 overall on the big board, whereas Daniels is the third-ranked quarterback at No. 24 overall.

USC's Caleb Williams (No. 4 overall on the B/R big board) is overwhelmingly expected to be the No. 1 overall pick, leaving Maye and Daniels to battle it out for No. 2.

Sando spoke to one league executive who expressed concern over Maye's inconsistent mechanics.

"I think people struggle with Maye's mechanics," the exec said.

Maye saw his numbers take a step back across the board in 2023, which should be cause for some concern among scouts. His college career ended with consecutive poor performances in losses to Clemson and NC State, and the Tar Heels lost four of their last five games against FBS opponents.

Daniels, meanwhile, soared to superstardom at LSU and ran away with the Heisman Trophy voting. His numbers and skill set have been compared favorably to Lamar Jackson, who is coming off an MVP campaign.

Maye has garnered comparisons to Justin Herbert due to his prototypical size and ability to create space within the pocket and scramble when needed.
