Strawberry played 17 MLB seasons from 1983 to '99 with four different teams. He is best known for his eight-year stint with the New York Mets at the start of his career.
The Mets selected Strawberry with the No. 1 overall pick in the 1980 draft. He made his big-league debut as a 21-year-old and won the NL Rookie of the Year award.
Strawberry made eight consecutive NL All-Star teams from 1984 to '91. He hit .264/.361/.517 and ranked 10th among all MLB players in FanGraphs' wins above replacement during that span. His 254 homers over that eight-year run were 22 more than any other big leaguer (Dale Murphy, 232).
After the 1990 season, Strawberry signed a free-agent deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers. He had a strong first year in L.A. with a .265/.361/.491 slash line, but his performance dropped off starting in 1992.
Strawberry would only play more than 100 games in a single season one more time in his career. He did have some solid years with the New York Yankees later in his career as a part-time player.
The 1998 season was Strawberry's last big year. He hit .247/.354/.542 with 24 homers in 101 games with the Yankees.
Strawberry won all three of his World Series titles in New York, including two with the Yankees and one with the Mets. He led the NL with 39 homers during the 1988 season.
The Mets inducted Strawberry into their Hall of Fame in 2010. His No. 18 jersey will be retired by the franchise during a ceremony at Citi Field on June 1 when the Mets host the reigning NL champion Arizona Diamondbacks.
