Report: Lakers Legend Jerry West Elected to Basketball HOF for Record 3rd Time
April 3, 2024
Jerry West was elected into the Basketball Hall of Fame as a player in 1979. Then he made it a second time in 2010 in recognition of the 1960 United States men's basketball team, which won gold at the Summer Olympics in Rome.
Now West has been elected a record third time into the Hall, this time in honor of his work as the Los Angeles Lakers and Memphis Grizzlies' general manager and also his stints as a consultant with the Golden State Warriors and Los Angeles Clippers.
ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported the news on West, who won six titles as an executive with the Lakers before winning two more with the Warriors during his time as a consultant. The two-time Executive of the Year has nine rings total after winning one as a player for the 1971-72 Lakers.
There are five ways for a person to make the Basketball Hall of Fame: player, contributor, coach, referee and team member.
West has knocked out three of the five now after checking off the contributor box. He did coach as well for the Lakers from 1976 to 1979, leading L.A. to a 145-101 record and three straight playoff appearances.
Of course, West is one of the most decorated players in NBA history as well. His accolades include 14 NBA All-Star Game selections, 10 All-NBA First Team appearances, four NBA All-Defensive First Team honors and memberships on the 35th, 50th and 75th NBA anniversary teams. West is also famously known for inspiring the NBA's current logo.
