Video: Browns Unveil New Helmets with White Facemask for Uniforms for 2024 NFL Season
April 17, 2024
The Cleveland Browns revealed Wednesday that their helmets will feature white facemasks during the 2024 season.
In recent years, the Browns have had brown facemasks on their primary helmets, but they wore white facemasks as part of their alternate throwback uniforms, and there was plenty of support among fans to bring the white facemasks back permanently.
That will be the case in 2024, hearkening back to 1975 when the Browns' facemask color was changed to white for the first time.
The Browns wore white facemasks from 1975 through 1995 until the franchise relocated to Baltimore and became the Ravens. When the Browns returned to the NFL as an expansion team in 1999, the white facemasks returned as well.
However, the facemasks were changed to grey in 2006, which was a callback to the pre-1975 helmets.
The facemasks were then changed to brown in 2015, and with the exception of throwback helmets, they remained as such until now.
Browns fans look favorably upon the white facemasks, not only because it is a clean look, but also because the team wore white facemasks during one of the most successful runs in franchise history.
From 1985 to 1989, the Browns reached the playoffs in five straight seasons and made it to the AFC Championship Game three times during that stretch.
By comparison, the Browns have reached the playoffs only three times in the past 26 seasons, and they have just one playoff win during that time.
The Browns enjoyed a resurgent season in 2023, though, going 11-6 and reaching the postseason despite key players such as quarterback Deshaun Watson and running back Nick Chubb missing significant time due to injury.
There was already a great deal of excitement surrounding the Browns entering 2024, and the facemask change figures to get the Dawg Pound even more hyped.
