Chiefs Rumors: Andy Reid's Contract Extension Worth $100M Over 5 NFL Seasons
April 23, 2024
Andy Reid's new contract with the Kansas City Chiefs will pay the head coach around $100 million over five years, according to Sportico's Kurt Badenhausen.
Those terms make Reid the highest-paid coach in all of American sports.
The Chiefs announced Monday they agreed to new deals for Reid, team president Mark Donovan and general manager Brett Veach but didn't disclose the terms.
"I'm incredibly grateful to Clark and the entire Hunt family for giving me the opportunity to lead this historic franchise," Reid said of his decision. "Over the last 11 years, Tammy and I have enjoyed calling Kansas City our home. The community has embraced us, we've watched our family grow, including having all 12 grandkids during our time here.
"On the field, there have been so many people that have contributed to our success and Super Bowls, and I'm grateful to the players, coaches and staff that have all invested their time into this process."
Badenhausen noted former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick is the only one who will have had a higher annual salary than Reid. His last deal with New England averaged $25 million per year.
The pay raise is well earned for the 66-year-old after helping guide the Chiefs to their second straight Super Bowl title and third of his tenure.
Nobody doubts that quarterback Patrick Mahomes is the single most important piece in Kansas City's recent success, but Reid has helped the team stay competitive despite losing multiple offensive coordinators and occasionally watching a key veteran exit.
Leading up to Super Bowl LVIII, some wondered whether Reid would choose to leave on top in the event the Chiefs beat the San Francisco 49ers. His status as a coaching legend will have been firmly secured and he's already one of the winningest coaches ever.
The potential to execute the first-ever Super Bowl three-peat offered plenty of appeal, though, and Kansas City ultimately gave Reid $100 million reasons to stay in his post.
