NFL Draft 2024 Rumors: Chargers Made It Clear They're 'Eager to Trade Back at No. 5.'
April 24, 2024
The Los Angeles Chargers are reportedly "eager" to trade back from the No. 5 pick in the 2024 NFL draft.
"The Chargers have made that clear—they want to move back," an NFL executive told ESPN's Jeremy Fowler. "They probably want an [offensive] tackle."
The Chargers have been linked to wide receivers and offensive tackles throughout the draft process. Their most natural fit at tackle would likely be Alabama's JC Latham, a natural right tackle who could combine with Rashawn Slater to give the Chargers one of the best tackle tandems in football.
Taking Latham at No. 5 overall would be a slight reach. He's a natural right tackle—the less premier of the two positions—and could be available later in the top 10 or even in the early teens. The B/R Scouting Department ranks Latham as the No. 13 overall player in the 2024 class.
Even if the Chargers were to miss out on Latham by trading back, Penn State's Olumuyiwa Fashanu or Georgia's Amarius Mims could also fit the bill. Offensive line is deep in this class, so it's of little surprise that the Chargers would to move back and add picks if that's their target area.
One could argue receiver is their more pressing issue after trading Keenan Allen and releasing Mike Williams this offseason. In that case, sticking at No. 5 and taking Marvin Harrison Jr., Malik Nabers or Rome Odunze might be the smarter play. Harrison, Nabers and Odunze are all considered bonafide WR1 prospects, and there is a noticeable drop-off after those three players.
