There are 20 post positions for the Kentucky Derby, and 19 of them have produced a winner over the first 149 editions of the event. The only exception? No. 17.

Fierceness, the early betting favorite to win Saturday's 150th Derby, will be looking to change that at Churchill Downs, where he'll start from the No. 17 post. The last time a horse started there and even finished in the money was 1988, when Forty Niner placed second.

While Fierceness has the best odds of winning this year's Kentucky Derby, plenty of other talented colts will be in the field. So, it's far from a lock that he could be giving trainer Todd Pletcher his third career Derby victory.

Here's a look at the full field for the 2024 Kentucky Derby, followed by a breakdown of the participants.

Fierceness (pedigree: City of Light and Nonna Bella)

Sierra Leone (pedigree: Gun Runner and Heavenly Love)

Catching Freedom (pedigree: Constitution and Catch My Drift)

Just A Touch (pedigree: Justify and Touching Beauty)

Forever Young (pedigree: Real Steel and Forever Darling)

Fierceness is the favorite to win the Kentucky Derby after finishing first in three of his first five career races. The colt is coming off a win at the Florida Derby in March, and he was also victorious at the Breeders' Cup Juvenile last November.

Sierra Leone will likely be Fierceness' toughest competition. The Chad Brown-trained colt has three wins and one second-place finish in four career races, most notably winning the Blue Grass Stakes earlier this month.

Another horse to watch will be Just A Touch, who was sired by 2018 Triple Crown winner Justify. He is trained by Brad Cox, who won the Derby with Mandaloun in 2021.

Dornoch (pedigree: Good Magic and Puca)

Mystik Dan (pedigree: Goldencents and Ma'am)

Just Steel (pedigree: Justify and Irish Lights)

Honor Marie (pedigree: Honor Code and Dame Marie)

Encino (pedigree: Nyquist and Glittering Jewel)

Track Phantom (pedigree: Quality Road and Miss Sunset)

    Stronghold (pedigree: Ghostzapper and Spectator)

Resilience (pedigree: Into Mischief and Meadowsweet)

Just A Touch isn't the only horse in this year's Kentucky Derby field who was sired by Justify. There's also Just Steel, a D. Wayne Lukas-trained colt who finished second at the Arkansas Derby in March and has 11 career races under his belt.

Lukas is a four-time Kentucky Derby champion, although he hasn't had a horse win it since 1999.

One name to watch from this group could be Encino, who was sired by 2016 Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist. The colt is trained by Cox and has won each of his past three races, including the Lexington Stakes (G3) in April.

Track Phantom is another solid sleeper pick, despite his fourth-place finish at last month's Louisiana Derby. The colt is trained by Steve Asmussen, a two-time Preakness champion and one-time Belmont winner who is still seeking his first Derby victory.

Catalytic (pedigree: Catalina Cruiser and One Show Only)

T O Password (pedigree: Copano Rickey and T O Rachel)

West Saratoga (pedigree: Exaggerator and Mo Wicked)

Endlessly (pedigree: Oscar Performance and Dream Fuhrever)

Domestic Product (pedigree: Practical Joke and Goods And Services)

Grand Mo the First (pedigree: Uncle Mo and Lilies So Fair)

Society Man (pedigree: Good Magic and You Cheated)

The seven horses in this group all have odds of 30-1 or longer to win the Kentucky Derby, so it would be a surprise if any of them emerges victorious.

Domestic Product could be a long shot to consider placing a small wager on, though. The Brown-trained colt won the Tampa Bay Derby in March, so perhaps he'll keep his momentum going with another strong showing at Churchill Downs at the weekend.
