The Dallas Cowboys' answer at running back is apparently a blast from the past, and rival fans are letting them hear about it.

Fans took to X to troll the Cowboys for their reported agreement with veteran running back Ezekiel Elliott on Monday.

Cowboys definitely winning superbowl this year. He's the missing piece. 😂

Cowboys fans thinking this is gonna win them a super bowl 😭

Desperation at its best. Could have gotten a number of YOUNGER running backs with far less mileage in the draft (even on day 3). This is just another reason why the Cowboys are doomed to fail every season. The 28-year Super Bowl-less streak continues...

The Cowboys are all in! Lol. This signing will surely get them to a Super Bowl now... https://t.co/acBoy55BVz

The Zeke/Pollard combo didn't work…but just maybe an older Zeke/Dowdle combo will be just what Dallas needs to finally get that Super Bowl. I'm happy I'm not a Cowboys fan. pic.twitter.com/4mx1MSPsoA

Todd Archer of ESPN reported Elliott's contract is for one season, though no financial terms were released.

Elliott spent last season with the New England Patriots after playing his first seven years in Dallas. He rushed for 642 yards and three touchdowns, both career lows, on a floundering Patriots offense. His 3.5 yards per attempt were also a career worst, and his longest carry of the season was just 17 yards.

The Cowboys had been strangely silent on the running back market since allowing Tony Pollard to leave for the Tennessee Titans in free agency. They did not select a running back in the 2024 NFL draft despite being one of the teams considered most likely to address the position.

"I've seen teams win the Super Bowl with running backs that they traded for midseason. The point is that this thing is a long way from being over as to how you're going to line up (during the season)," owner Jerry Jones said after the draft, dismissing concerns.

Elliott joins a running back room that includes Rico Dowdle and Deuce Vaughn, neither of whom offer much in the way of bellcow potential. Dowdle has just 96 carries in four NFL seasons, and Vaughn's 5'6" frame makes it difficult for him to receive extended work.

That leaves Elliott as the favorite to serve as the starter, an odd choice given Jones' proclamation the Cowboys were "all in" on the 2024 season. With coach Mike McCarthy, quarterback Dak Prescott and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb all in the final year of their contracts, odds are they all wish a bigger splash would have been made.
