Pick
Sierra Leone is the odds-on favorite and has momentum on his side following high-profile wins in the Risen Star Stakes and Blue Grass Stakes.
He is trained by Chad Brown, who will be looking to secure his first Derby victory.
The colt is an understandable favorite given his momentous start to 2024 and the team around him. It would be no surprise if he rolled into Churchill Downs on Saturday afternoon and dominated the race.
Catching Freedom is the second favorite, but the greatest threat to Sierra Leone may well be Dornoch.
The three-year-old defeated the Derby favorite in December at the 2023 Remsen Stakes. He has finished first or second in five of his last six races and should be considered when picking a potential winner outside the top two favorites.
"I may have shipped him in here a little too close to the race," trainer Danny Gargan said of his use of Dornoch before the Blue Grass Stakes on April 6. "He ran good but got a little tired. He'll run better next time."
How Gargan and his team adjust and prepare Dornoch will ultimately determine if there is huge upset Saturday.
