ESPN: Colts' Adonai Mitchell Hired Private Chef, Changed Diet to Assist with Diabetes
May 9, 2024
After going in the second round of the 2024 NFL draft to the Indianapolis Colts, wide receiver Adonai Mitchell is reportedly already taking steps to set himself up for success at the next level.
According to ESPN's Stephen Holder, Mitchell has hired a private chef and is "adhering to a nutritional plan to help him better govern his diet relative to his diabetes."
Holder noted that NFL Network and Go Long's Bob McGinn reported prior to the draft that he interviewed poorly during the pre-draft process, giving teams pause with regard to drafting him due to attitude concerns.
One potential reason for the poor interviews is the fact that Mitchell has Type 1 diabetes, and he has struggled to remain consistent with taking his medication, which can cause mood swings, per Holder.
After Mitchell won back-to-back national championships with Georgia in 2021 and 2022 and then had his best statistical season in 2023 with Texas, registering 55 receptions for 845 yards and 11 touchdowns, he was viewed as a potential first-rounder based on talent alone.
Instead, he fell to the latter portion of the second round before Indy took him 52nd overall in hopes that he can round out a talented receiving corps that includes Michael Pittman Jr. and Josh Downs.
According to Holder, Colts general manager Chris Ballard furiously defended Mitchell during a post-draft press conference, saying: "It's crap. This is a good kid. And for those reports to come out, it's bulls--t."
Mitchell is joining what seems to be an organization on the rise, as the Colts improved to 9-8 last season after going just 4-12-1 in 2022.
That improvement occurred despite 2023 first-round pick and starting quarterback Anthony Richardson missing 13 games due to injury during his rookie campaign.
With Richardson back in the fold in 2024 and surrounded by weapons such as Pittman, Downs, Mitchell and superstar running back Jonathan Taylor, the Colts have a chance to surprise and return to the playoffs for the first time since 2020.
