As part of its 70th anniversary this year, New Era has released images of MLB hats for the 59Fifty Day collection.
Teams featured in the collection include the San Diego Padres, Philadelphia Phillies and Brooklyn Nets, along with their retro logos and pins.
New Era was originally founded in 1920 by Ehrhardt Koch when it was known as the E. Koch Company. It got its current name two years later and developed its first hat for a professional baseball team in 1934.
The 59Fifty hat came into being starting with the 1954 season when Harold Koch, Ehrhardt's son, took over the business after his father's death. His idea was to make the hats more uniform with the jerseys and adding a buckram on the inside to ensure the logo was always facing forward.
Prior to adding the buckram, hats could easily tilt to the side depending on the shape of a person's head.
The design of the hat didn't change significantly until the 1990 season when the Cincinnati Reds opted to use gray as the under-visor color instead of the traditional green.
Since the Reds won the World Series in the first season with the new hat, more teams opted for the gray under-visor until every MLB club was using it by 1995. The under-visor color has since changed to black for most teams in order to protect against the sun's glare.
The 59Fifty hat has been the official on-field hat for MLB since 1993. New Era became the official sideline cap for the NFL in 2012 and on-court hat for the NBA in 2016.
