Vasiliy Lomachenko Beats George Kambosos Jr. By TKO to Win IBF Lightweight Title
May 12, 2024
Vasiliy Lomachenko is once again a world champion, claiming the vacant IBF lightweight championship with an 11th-round knockout win over George Kambosos Jr. on his opponent's home turf in Perth, Australia.
After dominating the bout for 10 rounds, Lomachenko used the 11th to put his opponent away. ESPN Ringside provided the video of the finish:
There will be questions about Lomachenko's age from now until he decides to hang up his gloves, but he put those questions to rest early in the fight. He managed the distance and got off to a fast start in the opening rounds.

This might be a long night for Kambosos .. <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/boxing?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#boxing</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/LomaKambosos?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#LomaKambosos</a>
The Australian showed some fight in Round 3. Kambosos fired off a few body shots in the third round that landed and got some respect from women's boxing legend Claressa Shields:

Lomachenko's brilliance was especially strong in the fourth round. According to CompuBox, he landed 21 of 46 punches while Kambosos landed just one of 30.
Not much changed as the bout progressed. Lomachenko cruised through the middle rounds looking like the vintage version of himself that won championships in three different divisions.

The performance also caught the eye of one of the biggest stars of the sport right now, Gervonta Davis, who indicated he is eyeing a fight against Lomachenko in a since-deleted post on X:
As Lomachenko put on the finishing touches of a blowout, boxing scribe Kevin Iole summed up what the loss means for Kombosos:
The IBF belt was the one Lomachenko was trying to win when he suffered an upset loss to Teófimo Lopez back in 2020. It's just another impressive bullet on his resume that he's been able to work his way back to the championship at 36 years old.
The Ukrainian has shown few signs of slowing down despite his advanced age. He fought Devin Haney to a unanimous decision loss that was closer than the scorecards may have you believe and has shown he can still fight at a championship level.
There might be another major fight on the horizon.
Promoter Bob Arum was already putting in some work on selling a fight with WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson.
"I have this other fighter, Shakur Stevenson," Arum told Sky Sports (h/t Tom Ivers of Boxing Scene). "So if Lomachenko wins, and Shakur –who is scheduled to fight in July – wins, then for the fall to do a Lomachenko-Shakur fight. Every serious boxing fan will be watching that in awe, between two great technicians fighting for a unified title."
Arum isn't wrong that it would be a thrilling fight for purists. Stevenson is an elite defensive fighter and Lomachenko's great blend of footwork and technical prowess would set up a great matchup.
Stevenson is scheduled to fight Artem Harutyunyan in July so there's still some time before figuring out what's next for Lomachenko.
