Dejounte Murray Teases Active 2024 NBA Offseason After Hawks Land No. 1 Draft Pick
May 12, 2024
Dejounte Murray has his popcorn ready.
After his Atlanta Hawks landed the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NBA draft lottery on Sunday, the guard took to social media to say the upcoming offseason will certainly be one to watch:
Atlanta was going to be one of the teams to watch even before the lottery, as Trae Young has already been included in trade rumors. While Young has been the face of the franchise during his career, the Hawks also haven't made it past the first round of the playoffs in each of the last three seasons.
They missed the playoffs entirely this past season and could be looking to make a change.
It should be noted that Young told reporters last month, "I want to be here. I want to be here, but I want to win too."
The Hawks will ultimately have to decide whether they want to keep the Young and Murray pairing in place, and landing the No. 1 pick adds yet another layer to that discussion. Perhaps the front office will decide to use that pick and end up with another franchise cornerstone.
Or perhaps it will decide to trade it for another win-now player to either group with the two guards or make a new primary pairing if Young is traded.
There are other potential trade candidates in the top five of the 2024 draft, as the Houston Rockets ended up at No. 3 and the San Antonio Spurs ended up at No. 4. Houston wasn't far removed from the playoffs this season and could look to add an impact player or two, while the Spurs may want to surround Victor Wembanyama with more win-now players.
The right trade for either team could land it in the Western Conference playoffs as soon as next season.
