Video: Sean McVay Shows Off Wild Trivia Memory for Rams' 2024 NFL Schedule Release
May 16, 2024
Based on how Sean McVay's memory works, it's baffling to think there was a time not that long ago when he was thinking about walking away from the NFL.
As part of the Los Angeles Rams' 2024 schedule release videos, McVay correctly answered 14 questions about each of the team's opponents that were about everything from random plays that happened in past games to player stat lines to the name of players' celebratory dances.
This is a skill McVay has been showing off for years. Going into his second season with the Rams in 2018, he had perfect recall about a play that Josh Reynolds scored on from the previous season and things that happened years earlier when he was an assistant coach in Washington.
Some of the questions McVay answered about all-time leading receivers on certain teams are things that a lot of fans can do, even if it's not about the club they root for.
The ability to recall the exact play from a random game that happened in the previous season, let alone years ago, is one of many things that separates McVay from everyone else.
How many Rams fans even remember what happened in the Week 7 game against the Detroit Lions from the 2021 season?
There were a lot of great things that happened for the team that year, culminating with a victory in the Super Bowl, but that game was fairly unremarkable other than being Jared Goff's first game back in Los Angeles after the Matthew Stafford trade.
The Rams won 28-19 after scoring 11 unanswered points in the fourth quarter. Stafford did throw for 334 yards and three touchdowns.
There were rumblings after the 2022 season that McVay was considering stepping down as head coach of the Rams to potentially work in broadcasting.
McVay eventually decided to return and led the Rams to a playoff berth last season with a 10-7 record. He's undergone significant changes in his life over the past two years, starting with getting married in 2022. His wife gave birth to the couple's first child on Oct. 25.
Given all that was happening in his life, it wouldn't have been a surprise if McVay wanted to walk away from coaching even though he just turned 38 in January.
As much fun as it would have been for McVay to bring his unique mind to the broadcasting booth, Rams fans are more than happy to have him back for his eighth season as their head coach.
McVay will enter the 2024 season needing just six victories to become the winningest head coach in Rams history. He ranks first in franchise history in playoff games (11), playoff wins (seven), second in wins (70) and third in games coached (115).
The Rams have had winning seasons in six of McVay's first seven seasons as head coach. They have made the playoffs five times during that span with two Super Bowl appearances, including a 23-20 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl 56.
