Maxey beat out Cleveland Cavaliers center Jarrett Allen, Miami Heat forward Kevin Love, Oklahoma City Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Sacramento Kings forward Harrison Barnes and San Antonio Spurs guard Tre Jones for the honor.

The NBA Sportsmanship Award is "designed to honor a player who best represents the ideals of sportsmanship on the court." Each team nominates a player for the award. Nominees are then whittled down by league executives to the final six players, and those players are voted on by their peers.

Maxey averaged a career-high 25.9 points, 6.2 assists and 3.7 rebounds per game in 2023-24, making his first All-Star team. He flourished taking over the lead ball-handling role from James Harden and established himself as a clear co-star for Joel Embiid.

Eric Snow previously won the NBA Sportsmanship Award during the 1999-2000 season. He is the only other Sixers player to win the trophy since its inception in 1995-96.

Maxey also won the NBA's Most Improved Player Award, joining Dana Barros among the winners in Sixers history for that honor.
