Steve Cohen: 'I Fully Expect' Mets to Make 2024 MLB Playoffs Despite Slow Start
May 16, 2024
Amid a 19-23 start to the 2024 season, the New York Mets face an uphill battle to try to avoid another disappointing campaign. However, team owner Steve Cohen has not lost confidence.
"I believe in this team," Cohen told SNY's Andy Martino. "I believe in the back of the baseball card. It's way too early to speculate on anything. It's May 16. I expect to make the playoffs. I know the fan base is frustrated, but it's still early. We're still very capable of making the playoffs. I fully expect to make the playoffs."
The Mets sit fourth in the NL East, 11 games behind the division-leading Philadelphia Phillies. New York has lost three straight games to Philadelphia entering Thursday's series finale.
While the team faces a large deficit in the NL East, it sits just one game out in the NL Wild Card race.
There had been speculation that the Mets were planning on rebuilding their roster when Cohen responded to a fan's question on social media by saying, "All in the future, not much we can do until the trade deadline." However, he clarified to Cohen that he didn't mean to convey that the team would be trading any key players in the next few months.
The Mets are looking to avoid missing the playoffs for the second straight year and seventh time in the last eight seasons. Martino noted that "the players believe in the current team, too," so perhaps New York's luck will turn around soon.
