Video: Colorado's Travis Hunter Says He, Shedeur Sanders Should Be Heisman Candidates
May 16, 2024
Colorado wide receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter believes that he and teammate/quarterback Shedeur Sanders should be considered Heisman Trophy candidates going into the 2024 season (13:40 mark).
Hunter was asked his opinion on an early Heisman Trophy watch behind the scenes of a EA Sports College Football 25 cover shoot.
He also mentioned that Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers and Michigan running back Donovan Edwards, who were also part of the cover shoot, should be in the running for college football's most coveted award.
Last season, Hunter caught 57 passes for 721 yards and five touchdowns alongside three interceptions and 30 tackles.
It's not unprecedented to see college football players participate on both sides of the ball, but Hunter has most certainly found himself in rarefied air, especially given how much usage he gets on offense and defense. If he excels again and Colorado makes a big improvement off its 4-8 season, then it's conceivable to see Hunter make his way to New York in December.
The other three players he mentioned should get their consideration as well.
Like Hunter, Sanders needs the Buffaloes to do better than last year to be in the Heisman running. But he certainly enjoyed a good individual season last year that he can build off, passing for 3,230 yards and 27 touchdowns (to just three interceptions) in 2023.
Ewers just led the Longhorns to a Big 12 title and a CFP semifinal appearance after throwing for 3,479 yards and 22 touchdowns (six picks). Texas now faces a more daunting schedule with its SEC football debut, but if the Longhorns find themselves in the now 12-team CFP picture, Ewers could be a Heisman candidate as well.
And then there's Edwards, who now takes over the Michigan backfield after Blake Corum left for the NFL. The defending national champions lost a lot of talent to the NFL but still have a lot of great players left over, namely Edwards, who has rushed for 5.7 yards per carry over his three-year career. He has 2,376 total yards and 18 touchdowns on 362 touches at Michigan.
