Giants' Daniel Jones Cleared for Training Camp in Return from Surgery on Knee Injury
July 24, 2024
New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones appears to be fully recovered from the torn ACL that prematurely ended his 2023 season.
Head coach Brian Daboll announced on Wednesday that Jones is "getting all the reps" with the starting unit in training camp after being medically cleared for 11-on-11 drills.
Injuries have affected Jones throughout his six-season career.
A high ankle sprain in his rookie year led to two missed games in 2019. A right hamstring and a right ankle sprain forced him to miss a game apiece for each ailment in 2020.
Then a far more serious injury occurred in 2021, when Jones suffered a season-ending neck ailment that cut his season short after 11 games.
Jones finally enjoyed a clean bill of health in 2022, playing 18 games including playoffs.
However, he then suffered two serious injuries in 2023—a neck injury that caused "significant weakness" in his left arm and forced him out for three games and a torn ACL that ended his season.
The former Duke star has endured an up-and-down career after Big Blue selected him sixth overall in the 2019 NFL draft.
The biggest high occurred in 2022, when Jones helped lead the Giants to their first playoff appearance since 2016 and first playoff win since 2011. He accounted for 22 total touchdowns (and only five interceptions) and had 379 total yards in the Wild Card win over the Minnesota Vikings.
However, the Giants' offense has finished second-last in scoring in 2020 and 2021 and third-last in 2023. Jones in particular struggled mightily when he played last year, throwing for just two touchdowns and six interceptions.
Jones has played behind a leaky offensive line for much of his career, hindering his development. He's also played for three different head coaches and four offensive coordinators, and that can't help matters either.
Getting a full training camp and preseason to work with the offense—especially rookie receiver Malik Nabers—should put Jones in a much better position to succeed in 2024.
The Giants are having their first full training camp practice on Wednesday. Their first preseason game will be against the Detroit Lions at Metlife Stadium on Aug. 8.
