The first day of the French Open certainly lived up to expectations.

On the men's side, Carlos Alcaraz began his French Open campaign with a dominant victory, while Hubert Hurkacz fought from a set down to avoid what would have been a stunning upset.

Elsewhere, Stan Wawrinka defeated Andy Murray in straight sets in a match that could possibly have been the Brit's last on clay, while former world No. 4 Kei Nishikori, who had not played in a clay tournament since the 2021 French Open, won in five sets.

On the women's side, both Caroline Garcia and Naomi Osaka earned hard-fought wins, each needing three sets to do so.

Entering the French Open, Carlos Alcaraz had not played a match since May 1, yet none of that seemed to matter when he took the court on Sunday.

The No. 3 seed defeated J.J. Wolf in a routine straight-set match that lasted less than two hours.

The young Spaniard thrived at the net and committed few unforced errors.

Alcaraz once again has a favorable matchup in the second round and should be able to win in straight sets.

On the women's side, Naomi Osaka won her first-round match against Lucia Bronzetti in three sets.

Osaka, who has not played one Grand Slam tournament since the 2022 US Open, will have her hands full in the second round, facing No. 1 seed Iga Swiatek.

While Swiatek has the best odds to win the French Open, Osaka should be considered anything but an easy out, especially with her experience and success at this level.

Two players left Sunday's matches with their fans feeling a strong sense of nostalgia.

Home-crowd favorite and 37-year-old ageless wonder Richard Gasquet left it all on the court for his fans, backed by a powerful serve, an incredible one-handed backup, and impressive movement for a player of his size and age.

The French veteran and former world No. 7 put on a masterclass performance in front of his home crowd, defeating Borna Coric in straight sets.

Though Gasquet enters the second round, his next matchup will be far from easy.

The Frenchman will likely face No. 2 seed Jannik Sinner in a second-round match, again playing the role of an underdog.

While Gasquet delivered an epic performance, former world No. 4 Kei Nishikori, a three-time French Open quarterfinalist, won his first clay court match since 2021.

Nishikori has struggled with fitness issues in the past few years and has not played a clay court tournament since the 2021 French Open.

In fact, entering the French Open, Nishikori had just played one match all year.

Now, he is in the second round, with real hopes of going further.

Despite winning both the singles' and doubles' 2021 French Open, the past few years on clay for Barbora Krejcikhova have been quite difficult.

After losing earlier on Sunday, Krejcikhova has now failed to make it out of the first round of the French Open in three consecutive years.

The former world No. 2 struggled to maintain consistency throughout the match, losing in straight sets.

Elsewhere, No. 21 seed and home crowd favorite Caroline Garcia battled from a set down to move forward to the second round.

Garcia will have her hands full again in a second-round matchup against 2020 finalist Sofia Kenin, who has advanced to at least the fourth round in her last three French Open appearances.
