Mets' Jorge López Clarifies He Said He Was the 'Worst Teammate' After Viral Video
May 30, 2024
New York Mets reliever Jorge López clarified comments he made Wednesday after throwing his glove into the stands following an ejection during a 10-3 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
While speaking to media after the game, López said he didn't regret the glove toss. It was also a subject of debate on social media as to whether he called the Mets the worst team in MLB or himself the worst teammate in MLB:
López, who is a 31-year-old veteran from Puerto Rico, posted Thursday on his Instagram stories that he called himself the worst teammate, adding, "Thanks media for make it worse."
He later apologized to the Mets and their fans in a statement on Instagram:
Per the Associated Press (h/t ESPN's Jorge Castillo), the Mets "began the process of designating Lopez for assignment" after the game, meaning they will have seven days to trade him, release him or send him to the minor leagues.
New York fell to a disappointing 22-33 with Wednesday's loss, and it happened in frustrating fashion, as the Mets lost by seven runs despite the score being tied entering the eighth inning.
Reliever Adam Ottavino gave up four runs in the eighth, and López followed by surrendering a two-run home run to Dodgers superstar slugger Shohei Ohtani. He was ejected during the next at-bat while arguing a checked swing call involving Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman.
When asked after the game about López getting ejected and then throwing his glove into the crowd, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza made it clear that the behavior was objectionable, saying: "Whenever you're going through a stretch like this, you want to see some emotions from players, anybody in here. But what we saw today out of Lopey, that's not acceptable. And we will address that internally here."
López is in the midst of his first season with the Mets after signing a one-year contract in free agency.
In 28 appearances out of the bullpen, the righty is 1-2 with a 3.76 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 19 strikeouts over 26.1 innings.
López made his MLB debut in 2015, and he has had a nomadic career since then, playing for the Milwaukee Brewers, Kansas City Royals, Baltimore Orioles, Minnesota Twins, Miami Marlins and Mets.
His best season came in 2022 split between the Orioles and Twins when he went 4-7 with a career-low ERA of 2.54 and a career-high 23 saves en route to his first and only All-Star selection.
The Mets have lost three games in a row and eight of their past nine, putting them fourth in the National League East. They're 16 games behind the division-leading Philadelphia Phillies.
New York is also six games out of a wild-card spot, putting it in jeopardy of missing the playoffs for a second consecutive season and a seventh time in the past eight years.
