Novak Djokovic Withdraws from 2024 French Open Ahead of QF Due to Knee Injury
June 4, 2024
Novak Djokovic's bid for a second straight French Open title has ended in unfortunate fashion.
It was announced Tuesday that a right knee injury forced Djokovic to withdraw from this year's tournament at Roland Garros ahead of his quarterfinal match against Casper Ruud.
Djokovic confirmed the decision on social media, revealing that he has a "medial meniscus tear" in his right knee:
"I am really sad to announce that I have to withdraw from #rolandgarros. I played with my heart and gave my all in yesterday's match and unfortunately, due to a medial meniscus tear in my right knee, my team and I had to make a tough decision after careful consideration and consultation.
"I wish the best of luck to the players competing this week and sincerely thank the incredible fans for all of the love and continued support."
Djokovic suffered the injury in Monday's fourth-round match against No. 23 Francisco Cerundolo. After receiving treatment on the court, he stormed back from an early deficit to win in five sets, 6-1, 5-7, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3. The win was his 370th in a Grand Slam, surpassing Roger Federer for most all-time.
The 37-year-old expressed uncertainty about his status for Wednesday's quarterfinal match immediately after his victory over Cerundolo.
"I don't know what will happen tomorrow—or after tomorrow, if I'll be able to step out on the court and play," he said. "You know, I hope so. Let's see what happens."
Djokovic's match against Ruud, the No. 7 seed, would have been a rematch of the 2023 French Open final that Djokovic won 7-6(7-1), 6-3, 7-5. The victory was Djokovic's third French Open title and 23rd Grand Slam title, setting the all-time record. He extended it later in the summer by winning the US Open.
With Djokovic sidelined, the field is now wide open for this year's French Open title. Jannik Sinner joined Ruud in the semifinals by defeating Grigor Dimitrov in straight sets. Carlos Alcaraz will face Stefanos Tsitsipas for the chance to face Sinner, while Ruud awaits the winner of Alexander Zverev vs. Alex De Minaur.
