The Jacksonville Jaguars have reportedly given star quarterback Trevor Lawrence a five-year extension worth $275 million, per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

The new deal includes $200 million guaranteed and $142 million fully guaranteed, making his annual salary $55 million a year.

The Jaguars have $29.645 million in available cap space for the 2024 season, per SpoTrac, and $21.550 million available in 2025. Lawrence's new deal will certainly make a dent in their available cap space, but the team seems to believe the young quarterback will be a worthwhile investment.

Lawrence's extension ties for the highest-paid quarterback annually, as Cincinnati Bengals' star Joe Burrow also makes an average of $55 million per year. It also continues a trend of young quarterbacks getting lofty deals to remain with their teams after Burrow, Justin Herbert and Jalen Hurts all got paid in recent years.

Now, Lawrence will look to prove that he's worth the $275 million that Jacksonville gave him.

Given that he was the No. 1 overall pick in 2021, there were high expectations for Lawrence when he came into the league. While he has been solid, he's still looking to make the jump to become one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL.

Last season, he threw for 4,016 yards and 21 touchdowns—his second season with 4,000+ yards and 20+ touchdowns. That strong year gave the Jaguars enough indication that he is on his way to stardom, and now Lawrence has been rewarded.

Still only 24, Lawrence has plenty of time to continue developing and eventually make the next step of his career. The next step for Lawrence likely is to compete in the playoffs, which he has done just once in his three-year career.

The Jaguars are coming off a 9-8 season that saw them miss the playoffs just a season after reaching the divisional round. Now having paid Lawrence, there's no doubt that Jacksonville is expecting the quarterback to lead them into the postseason this year.
