NFL Rumors: Denzel Mims Signs Jaguars Contract After Release from Steelers
June 20, 2024
Wide receiver Denzel Mims didn't have to wait long for his next opportunity following his release Wednesday from the Pittsburgh Steelers.
ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Mims will sign with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He hasn't suited up since the 2022 season.
The 26-year-old, a second-round pick in 2020, caught 42 passes for 676 yards in 30 games with the New York Jets across three seasons.
Having requested a trade in 2022, Mims got his wish the following year when the Jets dealt him to the Detroit Lions. Thanks to ankle and calf injuries, however, the Lions waived him before the regular season kicked off.
The 6'3" wideout joined the Steelers' practice squad last October and was never elevated to the active roster.
Perhaps it's still premature to write off Mims' chances of becoming a consistently effective receiver in the NFL. His career to this point raises obvious doubts in that regard.
The Jaguars lost leading receiver Calvin Ridley but signed Gabe Davis and selected LSU's Brian Thomas Jr. in the first round of the draft. Christian Kirk is back as well after having averaged 65 receiving yards per game for the second straight season.
Mims could provide some depth in the receiving corps if he makes it all the way through training camp and the preseason. Beyond that, his role in Jacksonville will be limited.
