The Green Bay Packers announced Monday their board of directors unanimously approved Ed Policy as the new president and CEO.

Policy, who's currently the COO and general counsel for the Packers, will take over for Mark Murphy starting in July 2025.

"Congratulations to Ed on this well-deserved promotion to what I believe is the most unique and meaningful position in the world of professional sports," said Murphy. "Ed has been a tremendous asset to the organization during his 12 years here and has been greatly instrumental in our success. His work on Titletown has been particularly impactful. He is highly respected — both in the building and within the NFL. I've enjoyed working with him and am confident he will be an excellent steward for the organization."

Because of their status as a community-owned organization, running the Packers is unlike being in charge of any other NFL franchise. The duties are largely the same, though, as he looks to build on what Murphy has achieved in Green Bay.

Murphy has occupied his post since December 2007.

It didn't take long before he had to resolve a situation that would shape the team for years to come.

The Packers passed the torch from Brett Favre to Aaron Rodgers during the 2008 offseason, which was anything but a clean break. Still, going with Rodgers was clearly the right call as they won a Super Bowl title in his third season as the starter, and he emerged as one of the greatest quarterbacks in Green Bay history.

Policy shouldn't face a task quite so daunting when he's officially appointed next summer.

Head coach Matt LaFleur and general manager Brian Gutekunst are firmly entrenched in their roles, and the early returns on Jordan Love are encouraging as the long-term successor to Rodgers. He threw for 4,159 yards, 32 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in the 2023 regular season before torching the Dallas Cowboys in the NFC Wild Card Round.

Still, maintaining an already stable organization is a challenge all by itself. The Packers have missed the playoffs just four times during Murphy's tenure, and that kind of consistently can't be taken for granted.

Policy's 12 previous years working in Green Bay should help to ease his gradual transition into becoming the president and CEO.
