The Dallas Mavericks are not getting complacent after a trip to the NBA Finals.

ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported that the Mavericks had signed Klay Thompson to a three-year, $50 million contract with a player option for 2027-28.

BREAKING: Free agent Klay Thompson plans to join the Dallas Mavericks on a three-year, $50M deal with a player option, sources tell ESPN. Thompson ends his historic Warriors run as part of a multi-team sign-and-trade that'll also send Josh Green to Charlotte. pic.twitter.com/4GJ5hR3H5o

The deal was made as a part of a sign-and-trade that sent Josh Green to the Charlotte Hornets. That cleared $12.6 million in cap space, which will quickly be replaced by Thompson's $16.6 million cap hit.

Dallas will likely need to make further moves as it currently is over the second apron, per Spotrac. This means the Mavericks will be unable to utilize the mid-level exception, among other penalties, but adding Thompson to the talented roster surely softens that blow.

Here is a look at the potential Mavericks roster.

Starters:

Luka Dončić

Kyrie Irving

Klay Thompson

Daniel Gafford

Dereck Lively II

Reserves:

P.J. Washington

Maxi Klebler

Quentin Grimes

Dwight Powell

Dante Exum

Olivier-Maxence Prosper

A.J. Lawson

Jaden Hardy

Alex Fudge

Thompson brings championship pedigree to the Mavericks. He helped the Warriors earn four NBA Championships during his 11 seasons with the franchise. He was selected to five All-Star games and was named All-NBA twice with Golden State.

He averaged 17.9 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists in 2023-24, and has thrived as a co-star in his NBA career. That will continue with Dallas, as he will play alongside Kyrie Irving and Luka Dončić as the Mavericks look to remain quality contenders in the Western Conference.

Dallas went 50-32 and earned the No. 5 seed in the West. It would go on a lengthy playoff run that reached the Finals, but the Boston Celtics would win the Championship with a 4-1 series lead.

While Dallas' run was impressive, the talent difference between the Mavericks and Celtics was clearly a factor. Thompson significantly closes that gap between Dallas and other elite teams and gives the Mavericks a momentum boost ahead of the 2024-25 season.
