Leonard Fournette 'Motivated' to Land NFL Contract Before 2024 Season, Agent Says
July 9, 2024
Veteran running back Leonard Fournette has yet to be signed this offseason, but he's not giving up on landing a deal in the next few weeks.
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Fournette's agents Ari Nissim and Pat Capra said the free agent is "motivated to continue his NFL career" and hopes to sign with a team before the start of the 2024 season.
"Leonard's in the best shape of his career and I expect he will have a new home soon," Nissim said.
The No. 4 pick in the 2017 NFL draft, Fournette spent the first three seasons of his career with the Jacksonville Jaguars, topping the 1,000-yard mark twice in that span. He joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2020 and helped lead the team to a Super Bowl title that season. He earned the nickname "Playoff Lenny" after rushing for 300 yards and adding 148 receiving yards for a total of four touchdowns during the 2020 postseason.
After three seasons, the Bucs released Fournette in March 2023, and it took him quite a while to find his next landing spot. The Buffalo Bills signed him to the practice squad in October and elevated him to the roster in December. He appeared in two games with the team and rushed for 40 yards on 12 carries. He didn't play in either of Buffalo's playoff games.
The 29-year-old has career numbers of 4,498 yards and 34 touchdowns on 1,137 carries along with 312 receptions for 2,219 yards and seven scores.
While Fournette is not the workhorse he once was, he's a serviceable veteran who can add depth to a team's backfield. His playoff experience should make him an attractive option to teams looking to contend for a title in 2024.
However, the current state of the NFL is not favorable to running backs, so Fournette could have to wait a bit once again before getting the chance to earn a roster spot.
