Red Sox Pick D'Angelo Ortiz, Son of David 'Big Papi' Ortiz, in 2024 MLB Draft
July 16, 2024
Bronny James isn't the only notable athlete to be drafted by an organization with ties to his famous father this year.
As Chris Cotillo of Mass Live noted Tuesday, the Boston Red Sox selected D'Angelo Ortiz in the 19th round of the 2024 MLB draft. The infielder is the son of Red Sox legend David Ortiz, who was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame as a member of the 2022 class.
The younger Ortiz played for Miami Dade College and in 48 games slashed .328/.431/.374 with one home run and 38 RBI. While his father was a slugger, he is better equipped to hit for average as a versatile infielder.
Keagan Stiefel of NESN noted D'Angelo Ortiz also played two seasons for the Brockton Rox of the Future Collegiate Baseball League alongside a number of other famous baseball sons, including Manny Ramirez Jr., Pedro Martinez Jr. and Jaden Sheffield (Gary Sheffield).
Ortiz slashed .325/.426/.350 during those two seasons.
He has quite the legacy to live up to as he begins his professional baseball career.
After all, David Ortiz was one of the best players of his generation with a resume that includes three World Series titles, a World Series MVP, seven Silver Slugger awards and 10 All-Star Game selections.
He started his career on the Minnesota Twins but was best known for his accomplishments in Boston, which included all three of his World Series titles. He starred for the 2004 team that broke an extended title drought for the franchise that dated back to 1918.
The slugger finished his career with a .286/.380/.552 slash line, 541 home runs and 1,768 RBI and will forever be a beloved figure for Boston sports fans.
Now his legacy will carry on with the Red Sox through his son, who will look to make his own memories at the major league level.
