The Kansas City Chiefs are signing former Slippery Rock wide receiver Kyle Sheets, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported.

Sheets originally signed with the New Orleans Saints as an undrafted free agent following the 2024 NFL Draft in April. He was waived by the Saints on Sunday.

The defending Super Bowl champions signed Sheets after a tryout Tuesday, the day prior to the opening of training camp for rookies and quarterbacks.

Sheets caught 76 passes for Slippery Rock in 2023, ranking third among all Division II players with 17 touchdown catches and sixth with 1,186 receiving yards.

He will wear No. 29 for the Chiefs, per Matt Derrick of Chiefs Digest.

Sheets finished his college career as a two-time Division II All-American. Through four games and 51 appearances, he ranked top-ten in program history with 154 catches for 2,440 receiving yards and 29 career touchdowns.

Listed by Slippery Rock as 6-foot-4 and 220 pounds, Sheets showed off his size in front of 25 NFL scouts at Temple's Pro Day as he recorded a 4.52-second 40-yard dash and 4.0-second shuttle run while marking a 38-inch vertical jump.

Sheets' signing fills the empty spot the Chiefs had on the 90-man roster after releasing defensive lineman Isaiah Buggs following multiple arrests this offseason. Kansas City now has 91 players signed after using their international player exemption on Nigerian offensive tackle Chukwuebuka Jason Godrick, as noted by A to Z Sports' Charles Goldman.

The Chiefs, who have spent the offseason shoring up their relatively weak wide receiver room for the 2024 season, have now presented Sheets with a challenging path to making the practice squad.

He will need to impress during training camp in order to earn playing time against more experienced NFL depth wideouts including punt returner Montrell Washington and practice squad alum Cornell Powell.

Sheets is the ninth Slippery Rock player to sign with an NFL team since 2015, according to the university. Only one Slippery Rock alum, former Minnesota Vikings running back Brandon Fusco, has appeared in multiple NFL games over that span.
