Rory McIlroy had a brief and forgettable run at the Open Championship, missing the cut with a 36-hole score of 11-over par.

Speaking to reporters after his second round ended, McIlroy did his best to focus on what's coming next rather than dwell on the disappointment.

"It's not as if we only play four events a year," McIlroy said. "We play like 25. So there's still a few things there's left to play for. Obviously, the majors have come and gone."

This year, in particular, was a rough one for McIlroy. He did get a win at the Wells Fargo Championship in May, his lone victory as a singles competitor on the PGA Tour so far this season.

But the most memorable performance by McIlroy in 2024 was at the U.S. Open. He birdied four of five holes from No. 9-13 in the final round to open up a two-shot lead at one point.

McIlroy would close the round with bogeys on three of his last four holes, allowing Bryson DeChambeau to pass him for the win. He left Pinehurst No. 2 almost immediately without talking to the media after finishing.

In a post on X the next day, McIlroy called that final round "probably" the toughest day he's had as a professional golfer.

The 2024 major schedule is over with McIlroy unable to get a win in any of the four tournaments. He hasn't won a major championship since 2014 when he took home the PGA Championship and Open Championship.

McIlroy remains one of the best golfers on the PGA Tour. He's currently second to Scottie Scheffler in the official world rankings, but success in the biggest tournaments has been difficult to come by.

The next big event for McIlroy will be playing in the men's individual tournament at the Olympics in Paris. This will mark his second appearance at the Summer Games. He finished tied for fourth in Tokyo three years ago.
