Braves' Ozzie Albies Out 8 Weeks with Fractured Wrist Injury; Max Fried to IL
July 21, 2024
The Atlanta Braves will be without a pair of stars for the foreseeable future.
The team announced Sunday that second baseman Ozzie Albies will miss "approximately eight weeks" after X-rays revealed a left wrist fracture. The team also placed left-handed starting pitcher Max Fried on the 15-day injury list due to forearm neuritis, a nerve inflammation, per the Associated Press (h/t ESPN).
Fried will not pitch until his symptoms are gone.
Albies, who is coming off a career year with the Braves, has eight homers and 46 RBI with a .258 batting average through 90 games this season.
Fried, who was recently named to his second All-Star team, has 95 strikeouts, a 3.08 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP in 18 appearances this season, proving to be a critical member of the rotation with Spencer Strider out for the year.
Braves manager Brian Snitker said the lefty felt some pain before Tuesday's All-Star Game, and the pain was still there ahead of Atlanta's matchup against the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday, which ended up being postponed.
"Hopefully it is just a brief stint on the IL," Snitker said.
Fried and Albies' injuries add to an unfortunate list of players who have missed time this season. Along with Strider, who made just two starts before undergoing surgery to repair the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow, reigning MVP Ronald Acuña Jr. is out for the year after tearing his ACL.
Still, the Braves have managed to hold their own and currently sit at 54-44 on the season, holding the top Wild Card in the National League. While they might not reach the 100-win mark like they have the last two seasons, the Braves could still make a postseason push if they avoid any more injuries.
