Video: Carmelo Anthony Explains Not Joining LeBron, Dwyane Wade, Bosh on Heat in 2010

Carmelo Anthony revealed on Paul George's Podcast P, Presented by Wave Sports + Entertainment, on Monday that he and LeBron James had talks about joining forces during his career, but could never quite settle on the location.
He also believed pairing with James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh wouldn't have worked out, at least during his prime years:
Podcast P with Paul George @PodcastPShowCarmelo reveals how he & LeBron almost teamed up in Chicago before the Miami Big 3 formed.

More on the full episode premiering NOW: https://t.co/imWdpkOEeR pic.twitter.com/que1r9njov
"At that time, I wasn't ready to go partner and team up with nobody," Anthony said. "Because I was building my own s--t in Denver. So to leave my own s--t and team up with somebody... it wouldn't have worked, because we were all young and all going down our own path. 'Nah, I'm over here, whatever y'all going to do, ya'll going to do.'"
For Anthony, the possibility of being the fourth option in Miami was never going to sit right at that juncture of his career.
"I'm gonna keep it a buck," he said. "Imagine me at 23 years old, 24 years old, being the fourth option on the team, when I'm leading my team every single year. Like, I'm finding my way in this league. And you want me to leave that, and go be a fourth option? I don't know mentally how I was going to be ready for that. It ain't got nothing to do with money. I would have had a different role, I would have had to figure out my role on that team. These are alphas that are all coming together."
Anthony also made the point that James, Wade and Bosh left money on the table, and in the case of Bosh, sacrificed their usual role to fit into what the team needed. They made those sacrifices pay off in the long run, winning two titles together, but Anthony noted that other super teams compiled in the past weren't able to make it work.
And he didn't know if the four of them, together, could have made it work in Miami.
They are all fair points. Anthony was a 10-time All-Star who averaged 22.5 points per game in his career, and his role was generally to be his team's leading scorer. It's fair to question how much he would have offered a role player during his prime years.
And having those four players together would have been a lot of mouths to feed. That offense could have easily devolved into a "taking turns scoring" mentality, rather than the more flowing offense that James, Wade and Bosh ultimately developed in unison.
So while it's fun to imagine the ultimate super team that could have been formed, it probably would have been a disaster. And James and Anthony ultimately had the chance to team up with the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2021-22 season, Anthony's final year in the NBA.
