Only two days remain before the men's basketball tournament tips off in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, and it could be the most competitive edition for some time.

The 12 teams are split among three groups, and the top two will advance along with the two best third-place finishers. The quarterfinals get underway Aug. 6, with all roads leading to the gold-medal game on Aug. 10.

The United States enters as the favorite thanks to a team headlined by LeBron James, Stephen Curry, Joel Embiid and Jayson Tatum. But there's plenty of star talent dispersed across the field.

Canada boasts Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Jamal Murray. Serbia and Greece each have a pair of former MVPs with Nikola Jokic and Giannis Antetokounmpo respectively. Host country France has the formidable frontcourt duo of Rudy Gobert and Victor Wembanyama.

Here's a look at the squads for all 12 countries taking part, with the teams listed in descending order based on their FIBA ranking.

United States

The United States didn't much in the way of reinforcements, but it received a massive boost when Embiid chose to play for Team USA. He was eligible to represent France and Cameroon as well at the national team level.

The 7-footer gives the U.S. some needed size in a tournament featuring some decorated centers.

Spain

Gone are the days of the Gasol brothers and Ricky Rubio, so Spain doesn't enter this year's Summer Games as a medal favorite. Rudy Fernandez, the last holdover from the country's golden generation, will hope to close out his Olympic career in style.

Germany

3 of 12

Germany is counting on continuity to propel itself to another gold medal after winning the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup. NBA fans will recognize plenty of names from this roster, including Dennis Schroder and Franz and Moritz Wagner.

Serbia

    • Marko Guduric
    • Nikola Jokic

    • July 31: Puerto Rico (11:15 a.m. ET)
    • Aug. 3: South Sudan (3 p.m. ET)

It would be unfair to call Serbia a one-man team, but the country is clearly putting a lot on Jokic's shoulders. The opening game against the United States will be a major test for how far Serbia can go with Jokic and Bogdan Bogdanovic.

Australia

ABU DHABI, UAE - JULY 15: Dante Exum #11 of the Australian Basketball Men's Team high fives during the game against the USA Basketball Men's Team during the 2024 USA Basketball Showcase on July 15, 2024 in Abu Dhabi, The United Arab Emirates at Etihad Arena. Australia Roster

    • Dyson Daniels
    • Matthew Dellavedova
    • Dante Exum
    • Josh Giddey
    • Josh Green
    • Joe Ingles
    • Nick Kay
    • Jock Landale
    • Jack McVeigh
    • Will Magnay
    • Patty Mills
    • Duop Reath

    Australia Schedule

    • July 27: Spain (5 a.m. ET)
    • July 30: Canada (7:30 a.m. ET)
    • Aug. 2: Greece (7:30 a.m. ET)

Australia was the bronze medalist at the Summer Olympics in Tokyo, and another trip to the podium could beckon in Paris. The Boomers have a good mix of experience (Matthew Dellavedova and Patty Mills) and emerging stars (Josh Giddey, Josh Green and Dyson Daniels) who will be stalwarts for the national team.

Canada

6 of 12

LAS VEGAS, NV - JULY 10: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander #2 of Team Canada high fives before the game against Team USA on July 10, 2024 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Canada Roster

    • Nickeil Alexander-Walker
    • RJ Barrett
    • Khem Birch
    • Dillon Brooks
    • Luguentz Dort
    • Melvin Ejim
    • Shai Gilgeous-Alexander
    • Trey Lyles
    • Jamal Murray
    • Andrew Nembhard
    • Kelly Olynyk
    • Dwight Powell

    Canada Schedule

    • July 27: Greece (3 p.m. ET)
    • July 30: Australia (7:30 a.m. ET)
    • Aug. 2: Spain (11:15 a.m. ET)

Despite sitting seventh in the FIBA rankings, Canada might be the biggest threat to the United States. Gilgeous-Alexander was an NBA MVP finalist in 2023-24, and he's joined by a strong supporting cast. Murray can help shoulder some of the scoring burden, while Luguentz Dort and Dillon Brooks form a strong pairing on defense.

France

    • Bilal Coulibaly
    • Nando De Colo

    • July 30: Japan (11:15 a.m. ET)
    • Aug. 2: Germany (3 p.m. ET)

France is a three-time silver medalist in the Summer Games and a fourth could be in the cards on home soil. Les Bleus boast a number of NBA veterans across the roster, while the Gobert/Wembanyama frontcourt could be a defensive force.

Wembanyama was arguably better than advertised as a rookie, averaging 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds and 3.6 blocks with the San Antonio Spurs.

    Brazil Roster

    • Vitor Benite
    • Bruno Caboclo
    • Joao Cardoso
    • Geoginho De Paula
    • Lucas Dias
    • Cristiano Felicio
    • Marcelinho Huertas
    • Didi Louzada
    • Leo Meindl
    • Raul Neto
    • Gui Santos
    • Yago Santos

    Brazil Schedule

    • July 27: France (11:15 a.m. ET)
    • July 30: Germany (3 p.m. ET)
    • Aug. 2: Japan (5 a.m. ET)

As with Spain, many of the stars fans have come to associate with Brazil are long gone. Tiago Splitter is actually an assistant on the coaching staff.

Outside of 41-year-old Marcelinho Huertas, there isn't much star power at coach Aleksandar Petrovic's disposal.

Greece

    Greece Roster

    • Giannis Antetokounmpo
    • Nick Calathes
    • Vasilis Charalampopoulos
    • Nikos Chougkaz
    • Panagiotis Kalaitzakis
    • Giannoulis Larentzakis
    • Dinos Mitoglou
    • Dimitris Moraitis
    • Georgios Papagiannis
    • Kostas Papanikolaou
    • Vasilis Toliopoulos
    • Thomas Walkup

    Greece Schedule

    • July 27: Canada (3 p.m. ET)
    • July 30: Spain (5 a.m. ET)
    • Aug. 2: Australia (7:30 a.m. ET)

As difficult as it is for Antetokounmpo to get the Milwaukee Bucks to the NBA Finals in a given season, leading Greece to the medal podium might be an even bigger challenge. It doesn't help the Greeks were drawn in the strongest group of the tournament.

Puerto Rico

    Puerto Rico Roster

    • Jose Alvarado
    • Gian Clavell
    • George Conditt IV
    • Akeem Ford
    • Jordan Howard
    • Christopher Ortiz
    • Isaiah Pineiro
    • Davon Reed
    • Ismael Romero
    • Stephen Thompson Jr.
    • Arnaldo Toro
    • Tremont Waters

    Puerto Rico Schedule

    • July 28: South Sudan (5 a.m. ET)
    • July 31: Serbia (11:15 a.m. ET)
    • Aug. 3: United States (11:15 a.m. ET)

New Orleans Pelicans guard Jose Alvarado symbolizes his national team as a whole because Puerto Rico is a major underdog that will need to rely on effort and luck to get very far. The country doesn't match up well against pretty much anybody else in the field.

Japan

11 of 12

BELGRADE, SERBIA - JULY 21: (L-R) Yuki Togashi, Yuta Watanabe, Rui Hachimura and Josh Hawkinson of Japan during the International Friendly basketball match between Serbia and Japan at Belgrade Arena on July 21, 2024 in Belgrade, Serbia. (Photo by Srdjan Stevanovic/Getty Images)

    Japan Roster

    • Yudai Baba
    • Rui Hachimura
    • Josh Hawkinson
    • Makoto Hiejima
    • Akira Jacobs
    • Yuki Kawamura
    • Kai Toews
    • Keisei Tominaga
    • Yuki Togashi
    • Hugh Watanabe
    • Yuta Watanabe
    • Hirotaka Yoshii

    Japan Schedule

    • July 27: Germany (7:30 a.m. ET)
    • July 30: France (11:15 a.m. ET)
    • Aug. 2: Brazil (5 a.m. ET)

Rui Hachimura and Yuta Watanabe are the two most recognizable teams on the roster, which is an indication of how Japan is likely to fare. Maybe Hachimura can at least have a big game or two with a much larger role than he's accustomed to occupying with the Los Angeles Lakers.

South Sudan

12 of 12

    • Wenyen Gabriel
    • Peter Jok
    • Carlik Jones
    • Kuany Kuany
    • Bul Kuol
    • Jackson Makoi
    • Khaman Maluach
    • Nuni Omot

    • July 28: Puerto Rico (5 a.m. ET)
    • July 31: United States (3 p.m. ET)
    • Aug. 3: Serbia (3 p.m. ET)

Simply getting to the Olympics was a massive achievement for South Sudan, which only officially joined FIBA in 2013.

Khaman Maluach will be a player to watch in what's likely to be the country's brief stay in Paris. The 7'1" center, who enrolled at Duke, was the sixth-best overall player in 247Sports' composite rankings for the 2024 recruiting class.
