Dodgers Rumors: Jordan Lyles Lands MiLB Contract Ahead of MLB Trade Deadline 2024
July 25, 2024
The Los Angeles Dodgers and veteran pitcher Jordan Lyles reportedly agreed to a minor-league contract Thursday.
Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported the agreement.
The Royals released Lyles on July 20 after deciding not to put him on their 26-man roster. He had been away from the team since April 22 due to personal issues. In five relief appearances before his leaving the Royals, Lyles did not give up a run and allowed two hits in five innings pitched.
Lyles has spent the vast majority of his MLB career as a starter. He's posted a 72-107 career record with a 5.22 ERA and 1.40 WHIP, with 245 of his 357 games coming as a starter.
The fact that Lyles has been able to extend his career as long as he has while rarely being an effective pitcher has been impressive. Lyles has never posted a full-season ERA under 4.00, and he has regularly been a fixture above the 5.00 mark.
Recent seasons have seen Lyles be an innings eater at the back half of rotations, as he's bounced from the Texas Rangers to the Baltimore Orioles to the Royals since the start of the 2021 season.
The Dodgers are a World Series contender and are a virtual certainty to never put Lyles in high-leverage situations. It's possible he will make a spot start here and there or serve in long relief, particularly if the team needs to spell Clayton Kershaw as he works his way back into the rotation.
As it stands, this is a signing that should make next to zero impact on the Dodgers' 2024 season.
