Freddie Freeman's three-year-old son Maximus has been diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome, according to Freeman's wife, Chelsea:

The news comes about a week after Freeman stepped away from the Los Angeles Dodgers on July 26 to spend time with his family. At the time, Maximus was hospitalized after contracting transient synovitis.

"Emotionally it's been certainly hard for him," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reporters (h/t Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic) last Friday before his team's road game against the Houston Astros. "He needs to be with his family."

The Dodgers revealed Saturday that Freeman was placed on the family emergency list.

Chelsea Freeman previously revealed in an Instagram story that Maximus contracted transient synovitis, which is caused by "inflammation (swelling) of the lining of the hip joint," per the Royal Children's Hospital Melbourne.

"Dr says he developed transient synovitis from the viral infection he had at All-Star Week," Freeman wrote in part (h/t Emma Aerin Becker of People Magazine). "Day 3 of not being able to sit, stand or walk..."

"Everything is consistent with transient synovitis. He still cannot bear any weight to stand or walk so we will be closely monitoring him," Freeman wrote.

"If he doesn't improve in 48hrs he needs to go back to the hospital. We got discharged around 3:30am."

There is no timetable for Freeman's return right now as he joins his family, Roberts said last week.

"He's trying to be here for the team and also be there for his family," Roberts said, per Ardaya. "But when your child is going through things it's just hard to be present and rightfully so. He certainly had a heavy heart the last few days and I just pray that Max going to recover well and have a full recovery."
