The United States has its first Gold Medal at the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics

The U.S. 4x100 M Freestyle Relay team entered the race as the favorites and had won Gold in the event at the 2016 and 2020 Summer Olympic Games. It lived up to that expectation with a first-place finish and an official time of 3:09.28

Here is a complete look at the results of how all eight relay teams fared in Saturday's race:

  1. United States: 3:09.28
  2. Australia: 3:10.35
  3. Italy: 3:10.70
  4. China: 3:11.28
  5. Great Britain: 3:11.61
  6. Canada: 3:12.18
  7. Germany: 3:12.29
  8. Hungary: 3:13.11

The United States had to hold off an early charge from China, who led prior to the first exchange. Australia would take home the silver medal while Italy would take home the bronze.

The U.S. time did not break the all-time record of 3:08.24, which it set during the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Still, the performance starts the U.S. men's swimmers on a positive note as they look to dominate the competition in the pool.

The U.S. team consisted of Jack Alexy, Chris Guiliano, Hunter Armstrong and Caeleb Dressel. It was the American's 11th gold medal and 14th overall medal in the history of the race.

It was Australia's eighth medal in the history of the race and its first silver medal since 1984. Italy's bronze finish was its second medal in the event, with the other being a silver at the 2020 Games.

The U.S. is currently tied for first with Australia in medal count after the first day of competition. This includes the gold in the 4x100M Freestyle Relay, as well as two silver medals and two bronze medals from other events.

It was Dressel's eighth gold medal in his Olympic career, and he and his teammates will hope to carry the early momentum into more success in the pool. He will be back in action on Thursday during the 50M Freestyle Heats and will have his next chance at earning a medal on Friday during the final of that event.
