Olympic competition picked back up early on Wednesday morning with the women's individual triathlon, and the events were off and running from there.

As has been the case since the game began in earnest on Saturday, Wednesday featured another full slate of group play, plus medal events in sports like rowing, diving, fencing, gymnastics, boxing and BMX.

The United States continues to lead the total medal count. However, the race at the top remains tight too, as countries like France, China and Great Britain are keeping pace in the total medal race right behind the Americans.

The U.S. entered Wednesday seeking its fifth gold medal of the Games, after the women's gymnastics team delivered gold No. 4 on Tuesday.

Below, you'll find a look at the updated medal standings and some highlights from Wednesday's competition.

Gold medals were hard to come by for the United States early in the Olympics. On Tuesday, though the women's gymnastic team won the all-around team event, and Simone Biles made history with her eighth Olympic medal.

A day later, U.S. swimmer Katie Ledecky made a bit of her own history by winning gold in the women's 1500-meter freestyle.

Biles' win broke a tie with Shannon Miller to make Biles the most decorated U.S. gymnast in Olympic history. Ledecky's win pushed her into a four-way tie—with Jenny Thompson, Dara Torres and Natalie Coughlin—for the most Olympic medals in women's swimming history.

Ledecky has also tied Thompson for the most Olympic medals in U.S. Women's history. This marks Ledecky's eighth gold medal and her second medal of the 2024 Games. She also won bronze in the 400-meter freestyle on Saturday.

France's Anastasiia Kirpichnikova and Germany's Isabel Gose took silver and bronze, respectively, in the Wednesday's race.

Nikola Jokić, Serbia Bounce Back with Big Win over Puerto Rico

The U.S. team remains the favorite in men's basketball and kicked off its second game of group play against South Sudan at 3 p.m. ET. However, these Olympics serve as a reminder that some of the best basketball players on the planet represent other nations.

Nikola Jokić of team Serbia might just be the best player in the world, NBA or otherwise. However, his team needed to bounce back after falling to Team USA 110-84 on Sunday. Team Serbia did exactly that with a dominant performance against Puerto Rice.

Jokić got plenty of help from teammates like Bogdan Bogdanović (13 points, 3 rebounds) and Filip Petrušev (15 points, 9 rebounds), but the three-time NBA MVP was the star of the show.

    Nikola Jokic, are you kidding?! 🤯 <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/ParisOlympics?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#ParisOlympics</a> <br><br>📺 E! and Peacock <a href="https://t.co/zhRWpAov92">pic.twitter.com/zhRWpAov92</a>

Despite playing only 23 minutes, Jokić racked up a ridiculous 14 points, 15 rebounds and nine assists. According to FIBA, he is the first player in Olympic history to have at least 15 points, 10 rebounds and five assists in the same game.

"Tonight we really came to play. From the first moment we started aggressively," Petrušev said, per Kyle Hightower of the Associated Press. "...Overall, we are satisfied. But we need one more."

It was an important win for Serbia, as only two teams from each group can reach the knockout round. And while Puerto Rico isn't on par with basketball powerhouses like the U.S., France and Canada, it showed why Jokić is a threat to take over any game at any time.

U.S. Women Win Final Football Group Match

The U.S. women's football team was once an Olympic powerhouse. Between 1996 and 2012, Team USA reached the gold medal game in every tournament and won four golds and one silver medal.

However, the United States was knocked out of the quarterfinals in 2020 and took home bronze three years ago in Tokyo. This year, Team USA is looking for a little redemption.

The Americans were already guaranteed a spot in the knockout round heading into Wednesday's match against Australia. A 3-0 win over Zambia and a 4-1 win over Germany secured a top-two spot in Group C.

However Team USA wanted to finish group play on a high note, and it did exactly that with a 2-1 win on Wednesday. Buoyed by goals from Trinity Rodman and Korbin Albert, Team USA proved to be just a bit too much for Australia.

The United States doubles its lead over Australia on Korbin Albert's first international goal! <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/ParisOlympics?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#ParisOlympics</a> <br><br>📺 E! and Peacock <a href="https://t.co/zTE7VulYYy">pic.twitter.com/zTE7VulYYy</a>

It wasn't a perfect performance by Team USA, which had to survive a late surge from Team Australia. Alanna Kennedy scored early in stoppage time to give the Australians a very real shot at salvaging a draw.

Ultimately, though, Team USA played well enough defensive under heavy pressure to earn another win and a perfect record in group play.

The United States women will next play Japan—the runner-up in Group C—on Saturday (9 a.m. ET) in the quarterfinals.
