Tarik Cohen Retires from NFL After Comeback Attempt from Knee Injuries with Jets
August 1, 2024
Tarik Cohen's comeback attempt with the New York Jets has come to an end after he was placed on the reserve/retired list on Thursday.
ESPN's Adam Schefter first reported Cohen had decided to retire.
Jets head coach Robert Saleh praised Cohen's ability after Tuesday's practice at training camp.
"He looks really good—definitely like he's getting his legs under him." Saleh said. "He definitely has that short-area quickness. It's just a matter of him finding that long-range stuff that he had, which not to say it was slow but his long-speed was elite before the injury."
That same day, Cohen told reporters he "defintely" feels all the way back.
The Jets signed Cohen in May after he was released by the Carolina Panthers. He was expected to be utilized on special teams thanks to his return skills and the new kickoff rules that will likely lead to more return opportunities.
Cohen last appeared in an NFL game in September 2020 with the Chicago Bears. He suffered a torn ACL, MCL and fractured tibial plateau on a punt return when Brian Hill of the Atlanta Falcons got pushed into his leg.
The Bears kept Cohen on injured reserve for the entire 2021 season while he was recovering from the knee injury. He was attempting to make a comeback in 2022, but suffered a ruptured Achilles in a workout that was being live-streamed on his Instagram.
Carolina signed Cohen to the practice squad in September 2023. He did suffer a hamstring injury midway through the season that landed him on the practice squad injured reserve, though he was activated back to the practice squad in December.
A fourth-round draft pick by the Bears in 2017, Cohen appeared in 51 straight games to start his career before he began to having injury issues. He had 4,286 all-purpose yards from scrimmage and 15 total touchdowns in four seasons.
