Back in April, Jericho defeated Hook for the FTW Championship at Dynasty, ending Hook's reign at 238 days and taking the title away from the son of the man who created it in AEW commentator and former ECW star Taz.

Prior to their match at Dynasty, Jericho had been attempting to mentor Hook, but when he wasn't necessarily receptive to being taken under the veteran's wing, Jericho sought to teach him a lesson.

Coming out of Dynasty, Jericho created a new stable known as The Learning Tree and brought in Big Bill as his first pupil.

Jericho's rivalry with Hook was ongoing at that time, and it led to a three-way match against Hook and Katsuyori Shibata with the FTW title on the line at Double or Nothing in May.

The odds were stacked against Jericho, but he managed to retain thanks to help from a masked man who hit both Hook and Shibata with a trash can. That man revealed himself to be Bryan Keith, who was the newest member of The Learning Tree.

In the weeks and months that followed, Hook kept pursuing both Jericho and the FTW Championship. He took a step toward getting another title shot when he teamed with Shibata and Samoa Joe in a winning effort against Jericho, Big Bill and Jeff Cobb at Forbidden Door in June.

With Hook on his heels, Jericho made a drastic attempt to eliminate him fro the equation by throwing a fireball in his face.

Hook returned weeks later and challenged Jericho to an FTW title match. Jericho accepted on the Aug. 14 episode of Dynamite, but only if Hook agreed that he could no longer challenge Jericho for the FTW Championship in the event of a loss at All In, and Hook accepted the conditions.

All In represented a do-or-die scenario for Hook, and he came through with his back against the wall, bringing the FTW title back to his family.
