Chiefs' Andy Reid 'Alright' With Patrick Mahomes' Viral Behind-the-Back Pass to Kelce
August 20, 2024
Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid seemed to be the only person on earth who wasn't over the moon about Patrick Mahomes' behind-the-back pass to Travis Kelce in Saturday's preseason game against the Detroit Lions—but he didn't take issue with it.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, Reid said he was "alright" with the pass as long as it's a completion.
"I heard he blamed (Travis) Kelce, but that's alright," Reid said. "He does it in practice every day, and I'm alright as long as it's a completion."
The play occurred in the first quarter when Mahomes kept the ball like he was going to run an option then flipped it behind his back for a gain of eight yards to pick up a first down on third-and-3.
The play itself is one the Chiefs have run for years with Mahomes and Kelce, but the attempt is usually a shovel pass rather than behind the back.
During the NFL Network telecast (h/t The Athletic's Nate Taylor), Mahomes said he made the pass "out of spite" because he was "pissed" that Kelce didn't run the right route on the play.
"I was pissed off at Travis," Mahomes explained. "He was supposed to run a flat route. … I'm yelling at him and then he doesn't run it. So out of spite, I threw a behind-the-back pass, but now it's gonna be a highlight."
Kelce joked later in the game with the NFL Network crew that he didn't hear the play call:
"He kind of mumbled out the play and I couldn't hear it. I was walking up to the line and I was trying to decipher what he was saying. Before I knew it, he snapped the ball and then I kind of saw him out of my peripheral run to the sideline, so I was trying to go help my guy out. By the time I looked over there, he was already in mid-form, like a photo on a sports card, throwing the ball to me, so I guess right place at the right time."
Mahomes did note that he "can't force" that type of throw, but it "might be something that just kind of happens every once in a while" in a game.
There is the possibility of a conspiracy in Kansas City about the nature of the pass. Mahomes said on FS1's First Things First in May that Reid wanted him to throw a behind-the-back pass "more than anyone in the world."
Now, after Mahomes does it and completes one in a game, Reid seemed underwhelmed by the moment. It could be due to the fact he gets to see Mahomes in practice on a daily basis that nothing surprises him anymore.
Whatever the reason, Mahomes putting another trick play on tape gives opposing defensive coaches and players just one more thing they have to think about when they go up against the Chiefs.
