Cowboys' Jerry Jones Wants to See More from Trey Lance, Says QB Will Make Roster
August 20, 2024
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones confirmed that quarterback Trey Lance will make the team's 53-man roster for the 2024 season.
However, Jones said he "needs to see more" from Lance, Jon Machota wrote for The Athletic.
The Cowboys acquired Lance from the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for a fourth-round pick in August 2023. The former No. 3 pick has seen action in both of Dallas' games so far this preseason.
Most recently Lance had a strong performance in Saturday's 27-12 preseason win over the Las Vegas Raiders.
He connected on 15 of 23 passes for 151 yards and a touchdown, while adding 36 yards and a score on the ground.

Lance said after the victory that he "felt more comfortable coming out" than in his Cowboys preseason debut, during which he was unable to score in eight possessions.
"I'm gonna watch the tape and learn from it and do the same exact thing next week," Lance said after the game, per DallasCowboys.com's Patrik Walker.
Lance could see more playing time again on Saturday during the Cowboys' preseason finale against the Los Angeles Chargers.
That might be necessary before the Cowboys make a final decision on Lance's position in the team's depth chart.
Lance is coming to Dallas with a limited resume after a season-ending injury and the arrival of current 49ers starter Brock Purdy limited him to eight regular-season games in San Francisco. In those eight games, Lance went 56-of-102 for 797 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions.
The former 49ers signal caller is currently listed third on the Cowboys' unofficial depth chart behind Dak Prescott and Cooper Rush.
Rush is a six-season incumbent, having filled the backup role in Dallas since he first joined the Cowboys for the 2017 season. But Lance has already made the final roster cut, and could eventually challenge Rush for the backup role if he is able to continue building on his performance against the Raiders.
