NFL Trade Rumors: Texans WR John Metchie III Interests Multiple Teams Ahead of Week 1
August 26, 2024
The Houston Texans have been contacted by "multiple teams" regarding the availability of wide receiver John Metchie III prior to Week 1, according to NFL insider Jordan Schultz.
Jordan Schultz @Schultz_ReportSources: Multiple teams have reached out to the #Texans to see if WR John Metchie III would be available in trade due to the plethora of receivers on their roster. It's unclear if Houston would move him, but several team are keeping a close eye.

The former 2nd-round pick out of… pic.twitter.com/2CmV2nMrbY
Schultz noted that it's "unclear" if the Texans would be willing to trade Metchie, although several opposing front offices are keeping a "close eye" on the former second-round pick.
The 24-year-old hauled in two catches for 21 yards during Houston's preseason finale on Saturday.
Metchie was drafted by the Texans in 2022, but he didn't make his debut until the 2023 season after he was diagnosed with leukemia during the summer before his rookie campaign.
Although he was unsure if he'd be able to play in the NFL following the diagnosis, he returned and appeared in 16 games last season. While primarily operating as a backup option, the former Alabama standout recorded 16 catches for 158 yards.
While C.J. Stroud will be back under center after an incredible rookie season, Metchie may struggle to stand out in a crowded wide receiver room.
Nico Collins signed a three-year extension with Houston after racking up a team-high 1,297 yards in 2023, and Tank Dell is set to return after his promising first season ended in Week 13 due to a fractured fibula.
The Texans also made one of the most notable moves of the offseason, acquiring four-time Pro Bowl wideout Stefon Diggs in a blockbuster trade with the Buffalo Bills on April 3.
With Houston attempting to build upon a trip to the divisional round of the playoffs, there may not be enough available snaps for Metchie in 2024. If the front office doesn't foresee a larger role for him, the team could start fielding calls from opponents before the Texans' regular-season opener against the Indianapolis Colts on Sept. 8.
