Danny Jansen has made MLB history, and in an incredibly unique manner.

The Boston Red Sox catcher became the first player in league history to play for two different teams... in the same game:

With this at-bat, Danny Jansen officially becomes the first player in MLB history to play for two different teams in the same game. 😮 pic.twitter.com/tO6dCtyQYd

But how?

Jansen was a member of the Toronto Blue Jays back on June 26th, and at the plate, when their matchup with the Red Sox was suspended due to weather in the second inning. He was then dealt to Boston ahead of the MLB trade deadline. The Blue Jays pinch-hit for him during the continuation of the game on Monday, while Jansen was behind the plate at catcher.

So the game starts with Danny Jansen getting pinch hit for and ends with him striking out. What a silly day.

Jansen said before Monday's game that he didn't think much about making history after being traded until buzz started to pick up about the possibility.

"Everybody keeps saying history is being made," he told reporters. "It's such a strange thing. I never would have imagined myself in this situation with it being history. I guess I would have assumed it would have happened before. That's one of the first thoughts that went through my mind."

Red Sox manager Alex Cora also didn't pay it much thought until a pair of baseball journalists reached out to him.

"Jayson Stark [of The Athletic] and [ESPN's] Buster Olney texted me last week a lot and I was like, 'What's going on?'" he told reporters. "They texted me to say hi, but they talked about the history of the game and they explained it, and I was like, 'OK this is something important.'"

Jansen also said the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown had interest in gathering a few mementos from the game.

"I haven't spoken to them directly, but I think there may be something about getting some things authenticated, and I spoke to some authenticators about maybe sending something so that's kind of been pretty cool," he said.
