WWE Rumors on Trick Williams' Viral Diss Video, Cody Rhodes' Earnings and The Rascalz
September 4, 2024
Bleacher Report catches you up on the latest news from the WWE Universe.
WWE Reportedly Happy with Trick's Dunne Diss Track
After getting attacked by Pete Dunne to close NXT No Mercy on Sunday, Trick Williams dropped a diss track about Dunne that gained a great deal of traction on social media.
Williams took several shots at Dunne in the video, calling him "Petey" and referring to him by his former name of "Butch," which is something that set Dunne off and led to his feud with Sheamus on Raw.
According to Fightful Select (h/t Nikunj Walia of Ringside News), WWE officials were "very pleased" with the fan response to Trick's diss track.
The video was referenced and quoted many times on Tuesday night's episode of NXT, which was proof that WWE's decision-makers were aware it had gone viral and gotten over in a big way with the WWE Universe.
On Tuesday's NXT, Williams and Dunne were scheduled to face each other in the main event, but they got into a physical altercation backstage, prompting NXT general manager Ava to put it on the middle of the show.
What ensued was a hard-hitting bout that ended in a double count-out when Trick and Dunne both went through the announce table.
That made it clear that the Williams vs. Dunne rivalry was far from over, and Ava confirmed as much later in the show when she announced a rematch.
On next week's edition of NXT, Williams and Dunne will clash in a Last Man Standing match with the winner going on to challenge Ethan Page for the NXT Championship on the first episode of NXT on The CW on Oct. 1.
Rhodes Reportedly WWE's Top Merch Seller in Europe
Undisputed WWE champion Cody Rhodes is continuing to cement himself as arguably the top star in the company as evidenced by his enormous international popularity.
According to Fightful Select (h/t H Jenkins of Ringside News), Rhodes topped WWE's merchandise sales during their recent European tour, which included the Bash in Berlin premium live event in Germany.
The Rhodes autographed weight belt was reportedly WWE's highest-grossing merch item of the entire tour, which speaks to just how big The American Nightmare has become.
Fightful added that CM Punk was second in merchandise sales, thus further legitimizing the rationale behind bringing him back to WWE last November following his release from AEW.
Like Punk, Rhodes went to AEW before returning to WWE, and in addition to being one of the founding members of the company, he was among its top draws.
That has clearly carried over to WWE, as Cody has been one of the promotion's biggest stars since returning at WrestleMania 38, catapulting him to a WWE title win over Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 40.
WWE continues to push Rhodes to the moon and present him as a face of the company every chance it gets, and Rhodes continues to make WWE look smart for that decision.
With SmackDown making the move from Fox to USA Network beginning next week, Rhodes figures to be heavily featured in all ad campaigns and on the weekly show in general.
WWE Reportedly Has More Plans for Rascalz in NXT
Amid their numerous recent appearances on NXT, there are reportedly plans in place for TNA's The Rascalz to continue showing up on WWE programming for the foreseeable future.
Per Fightful Select (h/t Walia), sources expect TNA X-Division champion Zachary Wentz and Trey Miguel to keep showing up on NXT for at least "the next couple of months," and officials being "incredibly happy" with Wentz's work and attitude is a big reason why.
Wentz signed with WWE in late 2020 and wrestled under the name Nash Carter, teaming with Wes Lee to form MSK.
MSK were two-time NXT tag team champions and won the 2021 Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic, but Wentz was released from his WWE contract in 2022 amid allegations of domestic abuse by his ex-wife, as well as the circulation of a photo that appeared to show Wentz imitating Adolf Hitler.
Wentz resurfaced in TNA and reformed The Rascalz with Miguel, and the working relationship between TNA and WWE has reopened the door for Wentz in NXT.
When Wentz and Miguel began appearing on NXT, they did so as Lee's friends and tag team partners, but Lee turned on them after an NXT Tag Team Championship loss to Nathan Frazer and Axiom.
That led to a grudge match between Wentz and Lee at No Mercy, which Wentz won, and Wentz followed that up by teaming with Miguel to beat Gallus and the team of Tank Ledger and Hank Walker to become No. 1 contenders for the NXT tag team titles.
With Wentz picking up multiple big wins recently, all signs point toward him being a fixture on NXT despite his status as a TNA-contracted wrestler.
