Saints' Alvin Kamara 'Going to Play as Long as It's Serving Me' amid Contract Rumors
September 4, 2024
New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara indicated earlier this offseason that he was hoping to receive a new contract, but it now sounds like he has a new outlook on his playing career.
While speaking to Nick Underhill of NOF Network, Kamara said, "I'm kind of like, I'm going to play as long as it's serving me. Not in the sense of money, but as long as I'm still loving and having fun, I'm going to play."
Kamara walked out of the Saints' mandatory minicamp this spring to send a message that he wanted a new deal. However, he reported to training camp on time and participated in football activities, seemingly putting the situation behind him. While speaking to reporters on Monday, he said it would have been "cool" to receive a new contract before this season, but it's now "too late for contract talk."
Kamara has two years remaining on his contract but has no guaranteed money and a $29 million cap hit for the final year. It's unlikely that the Saints would retain him under that number, so there's a chance that the 2024 campaign could be his last run in New Orleans.
The 29-year-old was a third-round pick in the 2017 NFL draft but immediately made an impact, earning Offensive Rookie of the Year honors and starting a run of five straight Pro Bowl selections. However, Kamara's production dipped last season when he posted a career-low 694 rushing yards in 13 games.
It sounds like Kamara would be open to continuing his career outside of New Orleans, so he will likely be motivated to bounce back in a big way this year as the Saints try to contend for a playoff spot in the NFC.
