UNLV Football Debuts Retro Helmets in New Uniform Photos Ahead of Game vs. Utah Tech
September 7, 2024
UNLV football will wear retro-inspired helmets during Saturday's Week 2 game against Utah Tech.
The Rebels shared an image of the new look prior to the 3 p.m. ET kickoff.
The helmets are modeled after the uniforms UNLV wore in the 1970s to mark the 50th anniversary of the program's only undefeated season in 1974.
At the time, the Rebels played D-II football with a roster featuring future NFL players including Mike Thomas and Glenn Carano.
The white helmets feature red face masks and a nod to UNLV's former "Sunburst Logo."
These helmets have never before been used by the program, according to UNLV.
UNLV will further honor the 1974 team with a celebration at halftime, according to the program.
This marks the third time the Rebels have debuted a retro-inspired helmet since head coach Barry Odom joined the program in December 2022.
UNLV debuted helmets featuring the word "REBELS" in a font that served as an homage to the team's 1980's uniforms last season.
The Rebels later wore helmets featuring a decal inspired by the one the team wore when running back Ickey Woods played for the team prior to joining the Cincinnati Bengals in 1988.
UNLV is heading into Saturday's game looking to ride the momentum of a 27-7 win over Houston in last weekend's season opener on the road.
Odom and the Rebels will fight for a second straight victory on Saturday as the team looks to follow up last season's first bowl game appearance in a decade by channeling the 1974 team with another winning record this fall.
